Lady Islanders Shut Out Tolman for State Championship

  • Name: Middletown High School
  • School or league: Rhode Interscholastic League
  • Team: Girls Varsity Soccer
  • Award: Division III Championship Title

Not one MHS fan was surprised to discover that the Lady Islanders Varsity Soccer team swept their way to today's Division III Championship win at Rhode Island College with a shut out score of 5-0 against Tolman High School.

Chelsea Dowler opened the scoring after already hitting her 100th and 101st goal in the last game on an assist from Kenleigh Hebel followed by Riley Turcotte who scored at the 13:29 mark.

Isabella Maguire scored at the 22:39 mark off of a rebound from their goalie on Kenleigh Hebel corner kick.  Chelsea Dowler scored again at the 57:46 mark off of an assist from Alisa Benson.

Kenleigh Hebel scored the final goal at 71:53 mark off of an assist from Chelsea Dowler.  Kaitlyn Griffith only had to make three easy saves in goal to record the shut out.

The game was won in the midfield. The Islanders noticed in their semi final match against West Warwick that their defenders stayed close to the goal, while their midfielders and forwards played well up field. That left the middle of the field open for the taking for Middletown. They could not contend with Islander speed and ball control.

Middletown's girls were first to the ball most of the night
and the Tolman players were left chasing the game. Tolman ran out of energy and Middletown continued to play at top speed. There was no doubt that Middletown was the better team.
