Here are five things shaping our community today, but certainly not all, so be sure to check our daily News, Calendar and Events listings for more happenings, as well as our local columnists' weekly articles for "news you can use."

 1. Honoring a Hero

Funeral services with full military honors are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. this morning to honor fallen solider Sgt. Michael F. Paranzino, 22, of Middletown, who died Nov. 5 in Kandahar, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device, or IED.

His funeral takes place at 9:30 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Also tonight, following the swearing in ceremony for newly elected local officials, the Town of Middletown will hold a special memorial service to honor Sgt. Paranzino. Please see next item below.
