After Cruise Ship Nightmare, Would You Book a Cruise?
Passengers reported five days of toxic conditions after a cruise ship lost power. Would this impact your decision to go on a cruise vacation?
Thousands of passengers and crew stranded on the crippled cruise ship Carnival Triumph arrived to port late Thursday, after spending five days in reportedly toxic conditions, reports the New York Times.
Passengers described cabins of total darkness, overflowing, non-functional toilets and long waits for food. The 14-year-old ship reportedly had similar mechanical troubles last month that delayed a cruise to Mexico.
According to Forbes, with a fleet of 100 ships, Carnival Corp. is the largest cruise company in the world and controls around 50 percent of the market.
Although at least one passenger has opened a law suit, lawyers say cruise companies passenger agreements are structured to limit their liability and define how a passenger can sue, according to the Long Island Newsday. Lawyers say unless there was serious personal injury related to the incident, passengers do not have a case.

I have a question: Why did we leave these 4000 American citizens (most of them seniors) 4 days in the middle of the ocean without fresh water, electricity, working toilets. Where were the authorities, the Companies disaster handling plans, the government immediate reactive plans, etc.?

Probably for the same reason Katrina wasnt cleaned up an hour after the hurricane hit. Probably for the same reason your electricity did not come on five minutes after the snow storm. More than likely it was the same reson the hand of government didnt magically apear every time you were going to hurt yourself. I dont expect the government to solve all problems. I'm ok with that. It's the "entitlement" mentality that drives me nuts.

Yes. I will still take a cruise in the future. Stuff happens. There are no guarantees in life that things will go as planned. I think the fact some passengers are suing is pathetic and is a prime example of one of society's problems right now. Somebody always has to be at fault and someone always needs to get paid for if they are unhappy. I do not doubt that conditions were terrible, but there are millions of people in the world who have it much worse everyday. They don't have the luxury of a tug boat pulling them back to a life of comfort. I say to the passengers, move on, hope tommorrow is a better day, and think of the story you have to tell for the rest of your life.

I went shortly after 9/11 when the price was around $50 per day (including lodging and food). Had a great time, and was not nervous at all about mechanical or terrorist issues. With an elementary understanding of probabilities, it's easy to be confident.

The problem with "society" is corporate American feels there should be no repercussions when they do not deliver as promised. Especially when it comes to actions which effect their profits. Why didn't they get a fleet of helicopters to airlift passenger to a safe, clean environment? Profits.

Of course I'd go--this and many others we are planning. If we heard about all the car crashes, no one would drive a car. People damage themselves far more with their own bad habits--drinking, drugs, and poor food choices than they ever will by taking a cruise, driving their cars, or flying on the airlines. You can live life, or you can hide in a closet and have no life. There is a fine line between looking after your own safety and living a cloistered life. I choose to live it fully while I can.

The main problem with Carnival appears to be Italian officers, can you say Costa Concordia? Carnival Splendor?, the cruise lines do a excellent job of hiding their poor safety record in regards to casualties such as fire & grounding. If you must go with Carnival check out their liners with British or Dutch officers.

How about a computer rejiggered episode of THE LOVE BOAT where Ethel Merman, Lyle Waggoner, Jim Backus, Rip Taylor, Ginger Rogers, Karen Valentine and Jo Ann Worley are stuck in the middle of the ocean in one of Carnival's luxury septic tanks? Comedy--and cancellations--ensue!

My daughter works in a restaurant in Mobile, AL. Her description of the passengers who disembarked and then descended on the eateries of Mobile, including hers, and how they treated restaurant staff (like crap, if you want to know), tells me "Carnival" should be called "Sideshow." I guess four or five days in a floating toilet will rub off on even the most genteel.
