Alleged Drunk Driver, Runs Over Himself

The following arrest was reported by the Middletown Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Randy Whitehead, 38, of 292 Fischer Dr., Portsmouth, was arrested after police said he was found on Green End Avenue, wedged between a tree and his SUV around 3:20 a.m. on Monday.

His right leg was inside the vehicle, underneath the driver's side dashboard, and his left leg was pinned underneath the door, between the tree and the ground, said police.  Police said Whitehead was in good spirits and told them he was fine, except his leg was numb.

Police lifted the vehicle's door high enough that Whitehead pulled his leg from underneath and he crawled next to a tree.  Whitehead allegedly said he was drinking in Newport, and stopped to “take a pee.”

Whitehead told police he apparently did not place the vehicle in park and it rolled backwards. He attempted to jump into the vehicle to step on the brake, but he slipped and fell in the process. The vehicle continued to roll backwards and he was unable to step on the brake. The vehicle finally rolled along side the tree, trapping his leg between the tree and the door.

Whitehead stated he had been pinned under the door since approximately midnight.  Police said he smelled of alcohol and conducted field sobriety tests, which he failed.

He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence. At the station, he registered a blood alcohol content of .113. and .119 around 4:20 in the morning.
