Aquidneck Island Warming Shelter: Your Questions Answered

The Red Cross opened a regional shelter at the Gaudet Middle School located at 1113 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown.

After the blizzard left most Aquidneck Island residents without power, the Red Cross opened a regional shelter at the Gaudet Middle School located at 1113 Aquidneck Ave, Middletown.  The shelter serves Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth residents.

As of 3:00 p.m on Saturday, 120 people have checked into the shelter, said Red Cross Shelter Manager Carmela Geer.  The shelter has a capacity for 549 people.

She said she is not concerned about turning people away if they reach capacity.  "The one cool thing about this team, is they will figure it out," said Geer.

Here is what you need to know about the shelter:

  • If you would like a ride, call Carmela Geer at 401-418-0071.  As of 2:30 p.m on Saturday the police and fire phone lines are down.  If you have an emergency, dial 911.
  • If you drive yourself, enter through Turner Road.
  • Pets are not allowed, with the exception of service dogs.
  • No alcohol or weapons allowed
  • EMTs are available for basic needs.
  • The shelter does not have pillows, but you are welcome to bring your own
  • Geer says to bring anything that will make you more comfortable such as bedding, clothes and things to keep kids busy.  National Grid says power could be out for several days, so you might be there for a while.
  • The shelter does not provide magazines, books, t.v., etc.  Bring things to pass the time.
  • The shelter is set up like a dormitory.  Individual rooms are only available for special needs guests.
  • Don't forget extra clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
  • Bring your personal hygiene supplies
  • Don't forget prescription medications
