Avengers Boy’s Lacrosse Team Advances To Semi-Finals

EGHS comes on strong in second half to win over Middletown Islanders 10-5.

The Middletown Islanders headed into Wednesday’s quarterfinal game hoping to unseat the EGHS Avengers, who led this year’s Division II with an undefeated regular season record and a league record 158 goals. Despite a strong first half, their hopes were dashed with a strong second half by the Avengers putting the game out of reach for the Islanders, 10-5.

The Avengers scored early against the Islanders with goals by Captains Kyle Carosotto and Ethan Zink, with Middletown hitting back with goals of their own. All season long the Avengers have struggled with slow starts and this game was no exception with EG ending the first half with a slim 5-4 lead.

The pace of play picked up in the second half with three unanswered Avenger goals in the third quarter and strong play by goalie Jack Trutza and the rest of the defense. Aggressive play continued through the end of the game ending in a 10-5 win for East Greenwich.

In recapping the game, EG Captain Brian Trapani noted that the team “had some rust and came out with our typical slow start.”

EG’s offense was more balanced in the game with two goals each scored by Carosotto, Zink, Feinberg, and Gehlmeyer. Single goals were also scored by Waitkun and Payette. Trapani remarked that this bodes well for the team as they move into the semi-finals.

“They will have to take into account all of our shooters, which gives us great flexibility and variety.”

The Islander’s goals were scored by Sullivan (2), Murphy and Mazzulli.

The Avengers advance to the semi-finals and will play Providence Country Day at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, at EGHS Carcieri Field.
