Cains Drops 'Midget' Name from Pickles After Cranston Mom's Campaign
Chelley Martinka, the mother of a baby with dwarfism, persuaded Cains to drop the name 'midget' from a variety of pickles after a campaign.
The Cranston mother of a child with dwarfism has compelled Cains to stop calling a variety of pickles it sells 'midgets' after a campaign that included a YouTube video and her blog.
Chelly Martinka is the mom of a 10-month old little person and said she was "shocked, appalled and hurt" when she saw a jar of pickles labeled "Kosher Dill Midgets" at a local Stop and Shop.
Her daughter, Adelaide Eileen Martinka was diagnosed with Achrondoplastia when she was nine-and-a-half weeks old. One in 40,000 births is of a child with dwarfism.
"I know that as times change it is hard for a company to keep up," Martinka said. "But for the equality of all children I hope you consider renaming this product for 2013.
Martinka said her little Adeline goes by many names. Addie, Bugga, little bit, "a long list of silly names."
But "one name I never want to hear is 'midget'."
The company that produces the pickles, Gedney Foods in Minnesota, responded by saying it would drop the word from their labels and would allow the remaining inventory of pickles to be sold out.
The company said it was "doing the right thing" in an e-mail statement but said it doesn't want media attention or recognition.
In the emotionally touching YouTube video, Martinka said she loves her little girl "without judgement" and appreciates the lessons that motherhood brings.
One of those lessons is that "making changes is never an easy thing," she said. "Sometimes what is new is scary and expensive. My husband and I know both quite well. But sometimes what's hardest to achieve is the most rewarding in the end."
"I just want what is best of my child," she said. "A world where she is not slang on a label. A place where she is just Adelaide."

OH MY GOODNESS. Lady, are you KIDDING ME??! How about you teach your child that they are loved and wanted for who they are instead of POINTING OUT the difference like you just have??! Good grief, take your P.C. stuff and go away.

Wow, what is this world coming too? Let's see, I'm offended that these kinds of people are always looking to make the media? Midget is a word in the dictionary meaning small. Doesn't mention this woman's daughter. So, let's see, I guess her principle is, if carefree pantiliners come in "long", that means some women's vaginas are longer than others? Really? Tootsie rolls come in midget size. Is that offensive? Get a life. Bra sizes come in different sizes....does that mean that big, breasted women are smarter than smaller breasted women. I'm offended that people actually need attention so bad that they take up room in the newspaper, when I like to read "real" news instead of petty crap. See a therapist !!

Thanks Misty, for taking time out of your day to write the most ridiculous thing I've ever read. You managed to compare a word that is used to make short people feel bad (it is) and compare that to long vaginas. And breasts. I think you should see a therapist for your obvious sexual addiction.

I couldn't agree more with Jennifer Lee and Misty Harbor, this is the result of "The Media" desperately seeking anything to fill all that empty news space with something. Midget means small. Maybe we need to rename the midget submarine the pickle submarine.

This is a result of years of exposure to liberalism. When you hear liberals like Chafee talk about being diverse and inclusive, he is talking about this nonsense. Don't say anything that could even remotely be interpreted as offensive to anyone and everyone has to be included in the group. No personal responsiblity for anything, it is always someone else's fault. I realize that this is not being politically correct, but I don't really care.

This is an email i sent to cains earlier today!
I am really upset over the fact that 1 person over the millions of people who consume your product, would be offended by "midget pickles". And for Cains to change the name of them is the most Ridiculous thing i have ever heard of. Cains should ashamed of themselves. I suppose losing hundreds or maybe even THOUSANDS of customers is better than to offend 1 person. I hope Cains is pleased of what they have accomplished NOT. I for one will never by another Cains product again.

Should we ban "Midgets" in Auto Racing as well?????? what is wrong with you Chelley??? The word "Midget" is only associated with "dwarfism when it is used in that manner towards someone. You obviously have self esteem issues with how you feel about your daughter. Address the issue of people calling your daughter and others midgets... Yes, perfectly acceptable. But to do what you did and then also state that you wanted to "Smash The Jar To Pieces" ???? REALLY? You're a sick person who is simply upset with the condition your daughter has.
Dont forget to call Webster to have the word banned from the dictionary as well. Maybe instead of wanting to smash the jar to pieces as you stated you should have smashed your ego instead. my god lady get a grip.!!!!
And I also will NOT be purchasing any Cains products either.

Wow, I'm amazed that this issue has had such a deeply personal impact on your life-and your right to eat Cain 's pickles. I'm intrigued as to why you have such an attachment to the word "midget"? Do you love the word so much that changing the label would change the delicious taste of the pickle? This has zero impact on you. Seriously, no price increase, no one's going to court....just struggling to find a reason why you are so troubled by this. Sadly, midget is an offensive word-used to make fun if people that are short. You can put a dress on a bear, but its still a bear. Cheers

Sadly Judy you are incorrect. The term "Midget" is ONLY offensive when used in a derogatory way such as "Hey look at that midget" And if you put a dress on a Bear it will probably tear you to pieces. Maybe you were referring to me but your comments are wrong still the same. What has a deep impact on me is people like Chelley who instead of loving her daughter for who she is, finds fault in words that have ZERO to do with her life.

I have a friend who is 6'10" tall and is offended when people refer to him as a giant. He told me he can't even go into a supermarket anymore because he is so offended by the Jolly Green Giant products. He is planning on starting a campaign to change the name to something less offensive like Jolly Green Person.

Misty, you are a true genius. You are obviously well researched on the subject of hate-speech. Small, large, black, white, are not words used to hurt. Unless you said, "I hate white people" or " I hate people with small breasts". If you say, "you are a midget" you are saying that to be offensive. I'm sad I had to explain this to someone.

hmmm, little people pickles???? What's next, fat people pickles, skinny pickles,,, see how sick people need media attention. Just like the atheist, Jessica Ahlquist in Cranston. She couldn't just ignore the banner, she had to get the ACLU involved so she could get free tuition and media attention. These racist, liberals need to get a life, and probably a job.

Wow, I'm offended that there is a "black history month". Is there a "white" history month? I could care less.....where is Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton??? where were their comments when the ex-cop in California got shot??? Those 2 usually are the first to make comments. But you didn't hear them this time, I wonder why....Any one who complains, or is offended is RACIST and an individual who never got or gets attention. If we didn't have people like this, there would be no medication, therapists, and so on.....or the ACLU !!!

It's a pretty sad commentary on the lows we have achieved when every adjective can be construed as or contrived into being some sort of epithet. The victim mentality rivals only that of the entitlement mentality in its destructiveness on our society.

The insanity of PC arises yet again. A pickle that is small and called a midget pickle is somehow derogatory? Really!!!!!!!
So I guess when this child who is after all a child and I am sure if raised properly will be able to defend themselves if a real deroatory remark is made, will now be able to sue under that hate speech laws which keep expanding with this nonsense, if some answers their childs question of (mommy why is that person so small?) Well you see dear that is what a midget or a dwarf is. It is a medical condition that some are born with but does not make them any different than any other human unless you let it make a difference to you. We are all different in our own way, in all area's. That my dear is what makes life so wonderful. The diversity of genetics.
How about we look at it that way, rather than tell our children that people that are different our different classes and have to be given special rights and all others must be prohibited from free speech that may or may not offend someone. geesh I hate PC.
Merriam/Webster Origin of midget; First Known Use: 1816
Definition of MIDGET
1: something (as an animal) much smaller than usual
2; sometimes offensive: a very small person; specifically: a person of unusually small size who is physically well-proportioned
3; : a front-engine, single-seat, open-wheel racing car smaller and of less engine displacement than standard cars of the type

As a 6 year old boy (circa 1946) I can clearly remember walking into a small corner store in Charles Town, West Virginia with my 92 year old great granddad. He opened his well worn change purse and said to the white teenager behind the counter "I would like half a pound of the Brazilian nuts, please". The boy responded to my 92 year old great granddad, "oh, John, you want some of the "nigger toes". The long walk back home was punctuated only by the sound of our shoes on the hard dirt road."He walked into the house, never saying a word to anyone , walked upstairs and stayed there for the rest of the day. Washington "Redskins", " Midget" pickles , "nigger toe" nuts...how is it possible that one cannot see the impropriety in these appellations. For those groups who, by accident of birth, are NOT the target of these negative terms remember two things:
1. Consider yourselves and your children lucky not to have these insults made part of their lives
2. With all due respect how can you possibly stand in judgement on a subject of which you have no first hand knowledge. It reeks of self righteous hubris.
