EBCAP's Head Start to Present Anti-Bullying Workshop on Thursday

The workshop will be held at the Early Head Start and Child Care building at 8 John Chafee Blvd.

National surveys show that nearly one third of all school children are involved in bullying episodes at some time, either as aggressors or as victims. According to Jill Harris, a family advocate at Head Start, these nationwide statistics hold true throughout Rhode Island.

On Thursday, April 14, the East Bay Community Action Head Start program is hosting the workshop, “The 1-2-3’s of Bullying – Education, Prevention and Conflict Resolution” to explore this trend and to suggest solutions to concerned parents.

Sponsored by Rhode Island College’s Masters of Social Work Program, the workshop is aimed at educating parents who want to know more about bullying and what they can do to prevent or stop it. To make it as convenient as possible for attendees, child care will be available on the premises.

The program will consist of talks by several speakers, including a representative from the Women’s Resource Center, a retired policeman who has dealt with bullying episodes, and people who have had first-hand experience with it. There will be plenty of time for questions from the audience as well.

Those who attend may have printouts of the workshop’s presentation so that they can review at home what they’ve learned. Attendees will also receive resource information for follow-up and support, and a “Facts on Bullying” sheet. Before they leave, participants will have a chance to sign cards to can send to state representatives asking that the legislature approve developing a bullying curriculum that can be used in schools around the state.

The goal of the program, Harris said, is to help parents become more aware of bullying and learn how to intervene in these situations, whether it happens in school or on the streets. They will also learn to be able to communicate with their children better about bullying.

“The 1-2-3’s of Bullying – Education, Prevention and Conflict Resolution,” will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Head Start Classroom located at 8 John H. Chafee Blvd., Newport.
