Below is a list of supplies recommended by ready.gov that can help prepare for Hurricane Sandy. For the latest developments on what to expect in Rhode Island click here.
As we learned last year with Hurricane Irene, it does not take a direct hit hurricane to take us off the grid for a while.
If you have already purchased supplies, tell us where. Are any stores already running low? Have you seen any price gouging or sales?
Recommended Supplies to Include in a Basic Kit:
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day, for drinking and sanitation
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Battery-powered radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries for both
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First Aid kit
- Whistle to signal for help
- Infant formula and diapers, if you have an infant
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Dust mask or cotton t-shirt, to help filter the air
- Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)

This is the worst survival kit list I have ever seen, especially since it's supposed to be for a hurricane. I couldn't stop laughing when I was reading it. It's a horrible mix of over-preparedness and under-preparedness. A whistle doesn't help in a hurricane. Plastic sheeting and duct tape are useless for sheltering anything more than a light rain. Lastly, if you need a wrench or pliers to turn off your utilities, you have other serious problems.

the whistle is for after the storm if you are caught somewhere-!!! charge cell phone, have cash on hand, water, fill up plastic bags with zip lock and put in freezer to help keep things cold, buy canned foods such as tuna, beans, peanut butter, etc. warm clothes, matches, candles, flashlights, batteries, etc. radio/batteries. to add to list above. Stay safe and don't forget tp pray! God Bless all who reads this! Sue W.

also, gas up your car, check on neighbors esp. the elderly. my mother always told me to fill up the bath tub with water in case you need extra.
pet food for 3 days as well.remove objects in yard that could fly around and cause injury. I like the whistle idea for after the hurricane dies down and you are injured or caught somewhere. Take good care!

You should also have a plan and have pre-done many things. At least with a hurricane you get warning, unlike a gas leak or disease outbreak.
Things like putting up storm windows and making sure everything outside is secured.
