It's one of those Rhode Island traditions — picking up fish and chips on Fridays during Lent.
Deep-fried chips (or french fries if ordered with a hamburger) may have first appeared in Britain second half of the 19th century. The Oxford English Dictionary notes as its earliest usage of "chips" in this sense the mention in Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities, which was published in 1859: "Husky chips of potatoes, fried with some reluctant drops of oil."
Dickens also mentions a "fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist, which was published in 1838.
Many Middletown restaurants carry on the English tradition of fried fish and potatoes, through a fish and chips offering on the menu.
But which Middletown restaurant has the best fish and chips? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
Here are what a few people had to say on the Middletown Patch Facebook page:
Brian Ernest Coddington Brewery.....real flounder, not cod

I started my personal Fish 'n Chips taste off last Friday at Anthony's. I did take-out......had a choice of cod or flounder (chose cod). The fish was batter fried and done to perfection....2 good sized pieces along with coleslaw instead of chips, for a satisfying meal ....and smiling, congenial service. Stay tuned for the next reports. GO FISH!
