Middletown Firefighters to Lose Their Locks for Charity
Several Middletown firefighters are raising funds to benefit the fight against childhood cancers.
For most people, sudden hair loss can be an uncomfortable experience. For kids fighting cancer, the loss can be downright frightening.
That's why a group of Middletown firefighters are joining firefighters from all over Rhode Island for a head-shaving party at McFadden's Pub in Providence on March 23.
“We’re going to have our heads shaved to show the kids that losing hair isn’t anything to be scared about,” said Middletown Firefighter Rob McCall, one of five firefighters from the department volunteering to lose his locks.
So far, more than 80 volunteers have signed up for the St. Baldrick's Foundation head-shaving event, according to the website. Many of the volunteers are firefighters from Rhode Island and southern Massachusetts.
The event also serves as a fundraiser, with “shavees” seeking sponsors and donations over the next few weeks before they shave it all off.
“Our goal is to raise at least $2,500 as a group,” McCall said.
Overall, organizers of the St. Baldrick's March 23 event have raised more than $16,000 toward the $50,000 goal.
Sponsorship donations can be made on behalf of the Middletown Firefighters Local 1933 through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation website here.
