Middletown Man Arrested in Alleged Robbery
The suspect was charged with first-degree robbery and crack cocaine possession.
Newport police have arrested the man suspected of robbing a Newport woman early this morning at the intersection of Gould Street and Congdon Avenue, officials said late Wednesday afternoon.
William Thomas, 33, of Middletown, was charged with first-degree robbery and possession of crack cocaine.
According to reports, he allegedly followed the 28-year-old victim home after she left Pour Judgement around 1 a.m. He pushed her down and stole her wallet before fleeing the scene in a car with another woman.
During the robbery, the victim broke off the side-view mirror of the car. Thomas later went looking for the mirror at the Newport Police Department, claiming a fighting couple had knocked it off.
Police found his story to be suspicious, seized his car and took Thomas in for questioning. He was subsequently arrested.
