Middletown's Islanders Varsity Football team, ranked 7th in the state, will battle 9th place Rogers High School this weekend in Newport for more than bragging rights on the Island; They go head-to-head for the division lead within the conference.
Coach Andrew Leys has had two weeks to prepare his Islanders for the rivalry match of the season coming up against Coach Frank Newsome's Vikings squad which is coming off last Friday's win over Narragansett, 41-16.
If the Islanders are to move the ball against Rogers they will have to do it behind star running back Rico McCray. McCray, who is averaging 146 yards per game, sets up an intriguing match against the Vikings' strong defense.
Middletown completely dominated on both sides of the ball in their last game against East Greenwich 33-0 nearly two weeks ago. The defense did not give up one first down the entire game and picked up three turnovers on the evening.
The offense lead by McCray and senior Quarterback Dylan Garcia will have to keep up the momentum as they face Rogers' multi-back running system with Christian Savage, Damion Rodrigo, Shawn Moore, Quarterback Cody Platt and option Quarterback Reeyon Watts.
Middletown plays Rogers High school at 7 p.m. Friday, oct. 15, 2010 at Toppa Field, Newport.
