Mother Who Brought Child to Domestic Break-In Arrested

The Middletown Police Department reported the following arrests this week.

A Newport woman has been arrested after allegedly involving her young child in the break-in of an ex-boyfriend's home in Middletown.

Middletown police arrested Dayanne C. Costa, 22, of 231 Maple Ave., Apt. 902, Newport, around 7:25 a.m. Wednesday on a felony charge of domestic breaking and entering and a felony charge of cruelty or neglect of a child.

According to the arrest report, Costa allegedly attempted to gain entry into her ex-boyfriend’s home on Granada Terrace around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday by opening a front window, then lifting her young son of an undisclosed age inside for him to open the front door. Costa then attempted to crawl inside on her own when the resident emerged from his room, saw her and called 911, according to the arrest report.

Middletown police arrested Costa at the scene and the child was released to the custody of Costa’s relative, according to the arrest report. Three other Middletown residents also provided witness statements to police at the scene, the arrest report indicated.

Domestic Vandalism

Bobby B. Mitchell, 21, of 8 Yarnell Ave., Middletown, was arrested around 1:04 a.m. early Thursday morning on a misdemeanor charge of domestic vandalism.

According to the arrest report, a 21-year-old Portsmouth resident filed a complaint at the , alleging that Mitchell broke her passenger side car mirror and rear windshield wiper. The woman told police they had argued at the Fastnet Pub in Newport and that he later damaged her car in the parking lot at the restaurant on West Main Road in Middletown.

The arresting police officer reported that Mitchell also pulled into the Middletown Police Station parking lot when he saw the officer inspecting the woman’s car. When questioned, Mitchell confessed to causing the damage, police alleged.

Credit Card Fraud

Mark B. Hassan, 18, of 745 Union St., Portsmouth, was arrested around 8 p.m. Tuesday night on two misdemeanor counts of fraudulent use of credit cards in Middletown.

According to the police report, the arrest came as the result of a joint investigation with the Portsmouth Police Department that stemmed from a stolen wallet reported on May 21 in Portsmouth. The credit card was later traced to purchases made at the on East Main Road

Portsmouth and Middletown police arrested Hassan with probable cause in connection with an investigation into area car break-ins. During an interview on May 24, Hassan allegedly admitted to using the credit card in Middletown at the Shell Gas Station and also at Taco Bell on West Main Road.  

According to the arrest report, the investigation confirmed with the area businesses that Hassan allegedly purchased $182.91 in Newport and Marlboro cigarettes and $6.13 in Taco Bell food using the stolen credit card.

Hassan was held overnight Tuesday to be arraigned at the Second District Court in Newport on Wednesday morning.
