Bicyclist Dies After Vehicle Accident on Purgatory Road

Police have identified the victim as 42-year-old Michael Strickland of Middletown. The accident remains under investigation.

 

A 42-year-old Middletown man died Thursday after he was struck by a vehicle while bicycling on Purgatory Road.

Middletown Police have confirmed that the victim of the accident was 42-year-old Michael Strickland of Middletown. Strickland was reportedly riding his bicycle eastbound on Purgatory Road, approaching the intersection with Tuckerman Avenue, when a vehicle operated by 51 year-old Arthur Chapman, of Portsmouth, was traveling up the hill on Purgatory.

Strickland was transported to Newport Hospital and later Rhode Island Hospital, where he died, said an official at the Middletown Fire Department. The fire chief reported that Strickland was wearing a helmet. 

The accident remains under investigation.

My heart aches for the Strickland family. Another 4th grade family at Gaudet that is going through some serious heartbreak.

just so sad for this family to loose there loved one "God Bless" this family and prayers go out to them from one family to another, there r no other words for this family"s heartbreak~~~~

what an awful tragedy. please let's use this as a reminder of how important it is to pay attention when we are behind the wheel of our car.
