Resident Claims Mountain Lion Spotted in Middletown
A woman said she saw a mountain lion near the NEX store on Green Lane last week
A mountain lion in Middletown? Although the idea seems far-fetched, a recent report is not the first time a Rhode Island resident has claimed to see a large cat.
Middletown Police received a report from a woman who believes she saw a mountain lion near the NEX store on Green Lane last week. Middletown Animal Control Officer Joseph Nunes said there have not been any other sightings reported.
This spring there were multiple reports of a mountain lion in Matunuck.
State officials first took the position that refuted eyewitness accounts, but they later concluded that residents had indeed seen a mountain lion.
Initially, DEM officials stated they found no evidence of a mountain lion, attributing the deer carcass found to a coyote or bobcat. Officials later acknowledged the evidence provided was "convincing" there was a mountain lion in the area.
"I believe it was a big cat," wrote the investigating Environmental Police Officer (EPO) in the DEM Incident Report. "It is possible it was a mountain lion with four eyewitness[es]... giving statements to us describing a mountain lion more than a bobcat."
According to National Geographic, mountain lions like to prey on deer, though they also eat smaller animals such as coyotes, porcupines, and raccoons. They are solitary and shy animals, seldom seen by humans.
What do you think? Have you heard any stories of cat-like animals in Middletown?

Yeah, I don't beleive this person saw a mountain lion. It just doesn't seem rational to think that a big cat could make it to the island without being noticed. Is it possible? Remotely. There is plenty of food sources to support a big cat in that area, but I would think that it was a figment of her imagination. A few years back, there was reports of a black bear and cubs over by the Melville area. Claims that never panned out.

I agree with Ralph. A mountain lion seems very unlikely given the difficulty such an animal would have reaching Aquidneck Island and then avoiding observation. A bobcat is a possibility - they can get pretty large - but even that seems remote. Actually, coyotes compete with bobcats for food in any shared habitat. Because of their numbers and willingness to intrude into human settlements, coyotes will run any bobcats out of the territory. I would check to see if the animal left any scat in the are. That should give you some idea as to what kind of critter the woman saw.

My wife thought she saw a large cat about 18 months ago near the Middletown Police Station. She described a mountain lion when she tried to explain what she saw.

There has been a wealth of information and sightings of mountain lions in CT, MA, VT, and RI over the last couple of years. There are other kills, one hit on the road in CT, tracks found all over, etc. The evidence is now becoming overwhelming of late. They are here folks, have been for decades. The numbers are coming up apparently based on the number of sightings. Some of the sightings are from expert sources. Bobcats and Mountain lions are nowhere near the same. If it has a long tail, and is over 100 lbs, sorry guys, the only cat in the US that fits that is a mountain lion. Melissa, you are among the ones that the state used to ridicule. Now they are taking it quite seriously.

I just saw a mountain lion in Exeter, RI! Couldn't take a picture, when we turned around flashed a high power light, he blinked and disappeared into schartners

It was 100% mountain lion. It was so cold last night we only found three paw prints in the snow. Tara Anderson also saw it, 50' infront of us with a super powerful flashlight beeming right on it.

So, I was hiking at Carrs Pond last weekend and found several different animal tracks in the snow. Took some pics to compare them. Was wondering if one of them was a large cat, I think this just confirmed my theory! I'm kinda excited!
