Beginning April 25, several items that are currently prohibited on planes will be allowed, including small pocket knives, announced TSA Administrator John S. Pistole. TSA said the change would align them more closely with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
The decision to allow knives has raised many eyebrows including those of Delta Air Lines’ CEO Richard Anderson who said it would increase safety risks, according to ABC news.
On the Middletown Patch Facebook page, many residents said they do not feel comfortable with the decision to allow knives.
“I think I should be allowed more than 3 oz of shampoo before a pocket knife,” said Becky Peckham.
Ken Gillen agreed. “Knives don't need to be on a plane,” he said.
New items that would be allowed on planes:
- Small Pocket Knives – Small knives with non-locking blades smaller than 2.36 inches and less than 1/2 inch in width will be permitted
- Small Novelty Bats and Toy Bats
- Ski Poles
- Hockey Sticks
- Lacrosse Sticks
- Billiard Cues
- Golf Clubs (Limit Two)
These similar items will still remain on the prohibited items list:
- Razor blades and box cutters will remain prohibited in carry-on luggage.
- Full-size baseball, softball and cricket bats are prohibited items in carry-on luggage.
What do you think? Should pocket knives be allowed on planes?

My question is,what reason would you need a knife to travel on a plane?

Yes they should. This is the first (very) timid step by TSA to restoring some rationality to their rules. Scissors of 5 inches have been allowed for years, but not a Boy Scout knife? Absurd.
For John - from the obvious (cutting apples) to the practical (needed at the destination, and not checking luggage). The given reason is so that TSA can actually concentrate on real threats, rather than wasting time on non-threats.
It's a start.

Yes, allow them. Times have changed since 9-11. No longer will passengers sit still when a muslim terrorist tries to hijack a plane with a box cutter or swiss army knife. If it happens today, the muslim terrorist might hurt one person, then he's in for the beating of his life by a planeload of very unhappy passengers.

No, how about the drunk passenger who decides too take out his pocket knife on the stewardess? We've gotten used to removing our pocket knives and putting them away. Robyn

Already answered. He will be beaten by hundreds of unhappy passengers. If he's a muslim terrorist, he will be beaten within an inch of his life and stabbed in his ear with his own pocket knife. Easy solution.
