A few strong to severe thunderstorms are likely this afternoon into the early evening hours, according to the National Weather Service. 

Thunderstorms, developing over northern New England, are expected to continue to move into Rhode Island later this afternoon. A few strong thunderstorms are likely. 

The storms are expected to move into the area between 5 and 8 p.m. 

The storms could bring damaging winds, large hail, heavy downpours and lightning. 

The National Weather Service says residents should "keep an eye to the sky" and move indoors if threatening weather approaches.
