Viewfinder: Local Farmers Markets Open to Fresh Season

Area farmers markets opened over the last week for the summer 2011 season.

Pat Baker, of Newport, comes back for a second piece of pizza from Bravo, a traveling brick oven pizzeria selling their goods primarily at farmer's markets. Baker likes the thin crust of the brick oven pizza and appreciated the fact it is not too "weighted down" with ingredients. He says he "will certainly be back for more next week."

Greg O'Neill of Bravo Pizza pulls fresh BBQ Chicken pizza out of the 900 degree oven. It is this intense heat that makes brick oven pizza so goods says O'Neill. The best perk for O'Neil when baking pizza's at Farmer's Markets is the access to fresh ingredients and seeing "the appreciation people have for local foods."

Perry Lewis of Middletown stops by The Coffee Guy for a boost while making the rounds at the market. Lewis comes to the market every week to buy flowers for his wife and said, "I love seeing all the people here, not a week goes by that I do not see someone I know." He adds, "this atmosphere can't be beat."

Dylan Keeson and John Pruell of Portsmouth gather up the goods from June of June Loves English Cakes. Keeson appreciates the fact that he just ate "about a whole cake just in samples," as well as having the opportunity to purchase locally sourced and locally grown food.

Karla Simmons of Simmons Farm laughs it up with her father Jerry and Barbara Barry of Portsmouth, who makes it to the market almost every week. Jerry enjoys working with his daughter at the market as he says, "she won't let me work on the farm because I am too old and too slow." Karla says the real reason she won't let him is he's "too bossy."

Ah, the farmers market.

Something about visiting one makes the summer even sweeter, as we appreciate the wholesome, fresh fruits and vegetables that are being grown right here in our own community.

The Aquidnecks Growers Market opened for the season on Wednesday, June 8, while the Aquidneck Grange Market welcomed visitors on Thursday, June 9. Patch recently stopped by both to catch up as the vendors get going for 2011.

The Aquidneck Growers Market will continue through October 29 in Middletown. You can visit the market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays at Newport Vineyards on East Main Road. Or, you can also stop by the Newport market on Memorial Boulevard, which is open from 2 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, also offering locally grown and harvested herbs, vegetables, flowers, meats, shellfish and many another items.

The Aquidneck Grange Market is held each Thursday from 2 to 6 p.m. at 499 East Main Road, Middletown.
