Will You Take the Plunge?

Several New Year's Day polar plunges are scheduled for Sunday. Will you be among the brave who participate?

It's cold out there, but that won't stop thousands of brave locals from splashing into our area's chilly waters on New Year's Day.

Annual Polar Plunges are being held all across coastal Rhode Island on Sunday. In Newport, plungers will gather at Easton’s Beach at noon. Hundreds of plungers, and spectators, are expected. After the plunge, everyone will head down to the Atlantic Beach Club in Middletown for the after-party. All proceeds from the event will benefit A Wish Come True.

Over the bridge in Jamestown, locals will plunge into the water there at noon as well. The popular event will take place at East Ferry in Jamestown from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Pre-registration is at 10 a.m.

Portsmouth's plunge is a small one, but still fun nonetheless. The Island Seals are taking a plunge into the waters across from Flo's Clam Shack on Park Avenue, at noon. Meet at the Beach House, 500 Park Avenue, first.

And if you're headed to South County, you could consider the 36th Annual Penguin Plunge to support Special Olympics Rhode Island. That one will be held on Jan. 1 at noon at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett.  More details can be found at Special Olympics.

Will you be diving into the frigid waters, or just standing by as a spectator? Be sure to share your photos from the event.
