Solving The Puzzle of the Perfect Easter Brunch Cocktail

With Easter Sunday right around the corner, learn what a group of local women selected as their favorite brunch cocktails

Easter Sunday is right around the corner and until last week, I had all the pieces of the menu in place, except one important detail. My father taught me as a litle girl, the trick to a moist ham is to put it face down in the pain and cover it with a foil tent.  "Only caramelize the glaze at the very last minute," he would tell me every Easter. "And do it at high heat." Originally from Minnesota, I would be lying if I didn’t admit the trick to perfect potatoes is plenty of butter and cream, and just enough salt.   The missing piece of the puzzle, and what some might consider the most important part of brunch, was the cocktail.  To solve the problem, I called up the most discerning food critics I know, my girlfriends.  I invited them over …

Middletown Native To Bring a New Beat to the Island This Summer

Chuck Rodriguez and Nerson Santiago plan to bring a positive hip hop beat to the island this summer with their group Strangaz.

Although just two years ago, Charles “Chuck” Rodriguez and Nerson Santiago had never met, they shared the same passion for music, but neither knew where to begin.   “I love writing rhymes,” said Santiago. “I've been writing since I was six years old.”   Rodriguez has been creating Hip Hop in any recording studio he could find since he was a student at Middletown High School in 1988.  After High School, he even offered to sweep the floors in a Fall River studio, to learn his way around the equipment and meet local recording artists. The need for an outlet became more urgent after Santiago lost a son.  He bought recording equipment, but he did not have anyone show him how to use it, so it eventually sat idle.   As if by design, the two men …

Rock Bottom: A Man's Journey From The Streets to Success

Mike Cooley will be signing copies of his book 'Rock Bottom' at the Middletown Barnes and Noble this evening.

If you met Rhode Island resident Mike Cooley, with his confident demeanor, expensive clothes and polite Southern accent, it is easy to assume he was brought up in an affluent neighborhood, attended an ivy league university and with his tall, athletic build, was the captain of his high school’s football team. However, Cooley did not go to an ivy league school or play sports in high school. If you look closely, you may notice the fight scars on his face and hands or the gang tattoo on his wrist, all permanent reminders of his life growing up on the streets of St. Louis.   In his book Rock Bottom, Cooley tells the story of how broken homes and abuse pushed him onto the streets and his struggle to find his way out. He eventually found success…

PHOTOS: Special Forces Land Black Hawks Near Easton's Beach

Enjoy the black and white photography of the special forces exercise that took place Friday afternoon.

Despite Friday's sunny skies and gentle warm winds, people out for an afternoon stroll along Easton’s Beach might have found themselves in a scene that more closely resembled the movie "Platoon."  In a helocasting exercise, Army National Guard Special Forces landed two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters at Dunlap - Wheeler Park next to the Atlantic Beach Club. They also did several water jumps off the coast. Twelve personnel from the unit made both daytime and nighttime drops, picking up individuals and equipment The Middletown Fire Department was there to ensure curious observers were not hurt or interfering with the operation, said Fire Chief Ron Doire.  Town officials said for future exercises, it would be helpful to have a police detail to …
