According to a new report designed to measure the economic impact of the Newport festivals, the events contribute to $5 million in direct spending in Rhode Island.
At the request of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), Newport Festivals Foundation commissioned a study designed to measure the economic impact of the 2012 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals on the State of Rhode Island. This study was conducted by Advantage Marketing Information, North Kingstown, RI. The results of the 19-page report concluded that in 2012: “This report confirms that the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals provide a tremendous boost to Rhode Island’s tourist economy,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “The Festivals are a huge draw, attracting thousands of attendees to Fort Adams each year who impact the local economy by spending close to $5 million on lodging, food and beverages, shopping, and …

A local production company will be filming the Coast Guard and Castle Hill Station for an outdoor adventure series airing this spring.
Kettlebottom, a Jamestown production company, announced it is filming the United States Coast Guard and the Castle Hill Station as part of an outdoor adventure series, Kettlebottom Outdoor Pursuits. The Kettlebottom production team will reveal a behind-the-scenes look at the U.S. Coast Guard and station, as well as the different ranks of the guard and their duties. Segments will highlight boating safety and maritime tips such as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and life raft deployment, navigation techniques and offshore preparation. When he arrives he is scrutinized by three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda the Good (Michelle Williams). Is he the REAL wizard of Oz ? He'll have to hit the yellow brick road with his flying monkey to retrieve the wicked witch's magic wand in order to make things right. The flash and dazzle of the movie are pretty eye popping. 3D cinema was made for this kind of movie. NASA is known for supplying some of the most engaging images of planets, asteroids, galaxies, stars and other celestial bodies. Now, the U.S. space agency is enthralling us with images of our own planet. Chris Hatfield, commander of the current International Space Station mission, this week released a stunning image via Twitter of the Washington area from a height of 230 miles. In the image, you can clearly make out the convergence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, as well as some details of the infamous street layout of the city. The image is the latest in a series of Earth-focused images from NASA. The legendary musician returns to the Ryan Center after five years for a show in April. Tickets go on sale Friday.
According to his website and Global Spectrum staff, Bob Dylan will return to Rhode Island to play at the Ryan Center on April 8 with Dawes. Information has also been distributed via the Ryan Center’s Facebook page, and has been circling around on social media as a result. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 1 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $68 for VIP Floor (limited quantity), $48 for the general public, $38 for URI faculty and staff, and $28 for URI students.
