Blog: State Website Improperly Used to Endorse Obama. Well Gov. Chafee?

The Internet has forever changed how we communicate with each other. The new media (this site, other blogs, social media, and podcasts) has altered how we consider the traditional media (newspapers, radio, tv) and certainly how we get the news. I turned to the world wide web (www.)'s YouTube to find a video about RI Governor Lincoln Chafee (I-RI)'s address to the Democratic National Convention. That alone is not surprising, millions do it everyday.

What was surprising was the video I found featuring Chafee and President Obama, with the Governor endorsing the President and stating that he would be addressing the DNC's convention yesterday. At the end of the video "infomercial" I was shocked to read "www.gov.ri.gov" a link to the State's taxpayer paid website.

How can this be? This is a clear violation of partisan, political use of publicly funded resources. I strongly object to it. The date that it was published to YouTube was August 30! The practice is wrong - regardless of party or personality. So much for a higher standard. Stop the practice.

Mr. Lafayette,
Your title is an outright lie. The state website was not used for endorsement. And you carefully don't mention that the video was posted on Youtube, not the state website.

To J. Lane McMahon-You're absolutely right-his title should be "Sour Grapes Poor Loser".

Whether or not you know it, Rene Lafayette is a former state representative who got cozy with the democrats and Bruce Sundlun back when Sundlun was governor. To reward Lafayette for his loyalty, and perhaps entice him to continue his loyalty, Sundlun gave him the political plum job of Executive High Sheriff, a great gig with a good salary, and nice perks. Problem is, ol' Rene had absolutely zero law enforcement/criminal justice experience, and all of a sudden he's in charge of the second largest law enforcement agency in the state at the time.

Fast forward to today, and now he's out of a job and basically on the outside looking in. So what does he do?-He turns around and starts bashing Governor Chafee, which for what reason is anyone's guess.

The problem with a guy like Rene Lafayette is that he benefitted from the political patronage system, and now he's turning around and biting the hand that formerly fed him. It's no big deal that he had the political plum job, but once the republicans got in and he lost his job, he should have just shut his mouth and left quietly. And why he's picking on Linc is very perplexing-Linc had nothing to do with him getting canned as high sheriff. Who knows-maybe he thinks if he moves over to the republican's side he might get his old job back in the year 2525 when the republicans return to power in Rhode Island.

Obviously.

Perhaps state resouces now should be used to do something equal for Mr. Romney? Yeah...right.

Yes, Publius, I agree, we should all want to live in America.

The FULL context of John Lennon's quote is as follows:

"If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome. Where else? Today America is the Roman Empire and New York is Rome itself."

Two questions:

First:
Is this an infraction of RI law? If so - cite the statute.

Second:
Why should we care what a partisan hack has to say?
(Here, online - or at the DNC.)

BristolRI02809 comes out to play
In, oh, the most predictable way.
(Oh yes he does).
So there’s a few more things
we need to say.

US Median income is at its lowest level since 1995. Oh yes it is.

Mr. Obama said (nomination acceptance speech) that he will “strengthen Medicare” by reducing health care costs.

But Mr. Obama has driven health care costs up to their highest levels ever. Oh yes he has. So it doesn’t seem that Mr. Obama’s plan will work to “strengthen Medicare”. Oh no it doesn’t.

The Democrats justify killing unborn babies for 3 reasons:
1. Birth control
2. the health of the mother
3. pregnancy resulting from rape (but the Dems never offer any data on about how many pregnancies actually results from a rape & it’s SO not “pc” to ask for data on this issue.)

Maybe it’s time to consider a more evolved approach:
1. there are other methods of birth control
2. prudent medical decisions to protect the health of the mother
3. stop & deter all those rapists

Mr. Fox wants to get married NOW. That's all, folks.

BristolRI02809 is much more interesting when he writes his fun facts about his favorite local Democrats “playing in the sandbox” with the “big boys” & “David” and “Kenny” & his “times” & favors and how state jobs are handed out…

It's really not the your business or the government's business if a woman is raped or not. She does not have to report that "data" to anyone unless she wants too. It's a personal choice.

Excellent point Renee - "personal choice" - so that puts all the #3's in the #1 category & then run it back through the loop and the Dems don't have to give a care about any pesky rapists. Fair enough.

As far as your neanderthal comments on rape and a woman's right to choose, it seems you would get along just fine with that POS, Todd Akin, the soon to be ex-congressman.

With your archaic and demeaning views on women's rights, it wouldn't be surprising if you supported segregated schools and referred to gays as "fags"

The Democrats voted three times to affirm that God belongs in their planks, but the leadership did seem confused by the level of the pro God supporters. To have to go back for two more votes indicates their reluctance to finally have to accept the will of the convention. This is proof that the Democratic Party has been taken over by extremists with the socialists agenda. The days of the Kennedys and the moderate agenda are over UNLESS the party rises up and throws out these extremists. This will happen if their so called "leader" is defeated in November. Many Democrats have left the party due to this extreme shift to the left.

Though I abhor Chaffee and would not vote for him ever. This story is very misleading. First off the video was posted by Chaffee himself. There is no video or link to the video in question or reference to supporting Obama on the State www.gov.ri.gov site. Yes it would be a violation of election laws to use the State site for that. However this does not exist that I can find on the site.

To the addresses at the end of the Chaffee video. He list the State site and his twitter account. Nothing wrong there at all. That is not using Taxpayer monies to put the name of a website to visit on your own private video, so unless you have evidence that tax money was used to actually produce the video Rene? You are incorrect.

If you dislike Chaffee as much as I do, I assume you think him to be a lowlife politions in every sense of the word as I do. This is not a gotcha moment or even an I wonder is it was taxpayer funded. It is silly and like somelse said a petty attempt to find something that obviously is not there. Jack-You spend 99.9% of your life on the internet-do a little bit of research on Rene Lafayette. He was a 4 term state rep who sucked up to Bruce Sundlun and Sundlun appointed him Executive High Sheriff when he had absolutely zero law enforcement experience, law enforcement credentials, or law enforcemement education. But being the suck up that he was, Sundlun put him in charge of a state wide law enforcement agency with almost 200 law enforcement officers. Now that he has lost all his political juice, he goes on the Patch to start bashing the democrats-the same democrats that gave him his political plum job in the first place.

So what do you think Jack-where is this guy Lafayette's credibility?

When the rights of one person are violated we are all diminished. That includes inept Governors as well as any citizen. There was nothing illegal about it.

The YouTube video Was published From the state website. It was a partisan piece created and published using our tax dollars.

In any other state in the union this is ILLEGAL. The fact that it ended up on YouTube is irrelevant. The use of Rhode Island government resources to get it there is wrong.

The people that are trying to justify these immoral and illegal acts is an example of what is primarily wrong with this state.

http://eastgreenwich.patch.com/articles/video-promoting-chafee-s-dnc-speech-removed-from-youtube-after-complaint.

“Christine Hunsinger, Chafee's spokeswoman, said Thursday the video was made by James Alvarez, who works in the governor's communications office.
He "volunteered to do it on his own time and used his own computer," Hunsinger said. "He was excited that the governor was giving a speech at the convention."
She said Alvarez was not asked to make a video promoting the speech and that "no state resources went into the making of the video."

"The governor is the ambassdor of Rhode Island," Hunsinger said, explaining why the office did not think it was wrong to include the url originally. But, she said, the complaint motivated them to ask that it not be included in the updated video.
A link to the video was included in an email sent out Aug. 30 announcing Chafee's speech. The address used to send the email was private: chafeednc2012@gmail.com. Hunsinger said it was sent out by the Chafee campaign.”

Sheldon Adelson, Romney's uber-billionaire casino owner and financial backer, pledged to give Romney $100 million -- or "whatever it takes" -- to defeat Obama.

Do you know why???

As Bill Clinton reminded us, sometimes the answer is as simple as arithmetic. So let's do the math:

According to a new report from the Center for American Progress Action Fund, Adelson will get $2 billion in tax savings from Romney in return for his support. And it will be paid for by every taxpayer reading this blog, so pass the word QUICKLY.

If Obama wins, everyone pays their fair share of taxes...including Mr. Adelson!

Tell me...
WHICH ONE IS MORE FAIR FOR AMERICAN FAMILIES?
WHICH ONE CAN YOU AFFORD?

Americans cannot afford to live the Romney-Ryan lifestyle without having the same personal wealth.

We can DREAM...but we know that it's not reality. Romney is still dreaming.

Interesting points. May we know more about your proposal and to how it should work?

It might be difficult to find bloggers who have no agenda.

As to those you call “housewife” bloggers, there’s a terminology problem there because even uber-liberal little Rhody has yet to pass a statute allowing anyone to marry a house.

Believe it or not, “housewives” who blog are actually very talented and knowledgeable individuals who deserve to have a voice even if the topic does not interest you.

Many of the so-called “housewives” are also “business professionals”, believe it or not.

Would actual “local yokels” have to identify themselves as such?

How “local” is the yokel required to be to count as truly “local” in the yokel department?

Should those posting comments be required to reveal their “op-ed” biases as well?

Or do we continue to assume that the readers are smart enough to figure it out?

Next, please get the ProJo to make changes similar to the ones you suggest for the Patch because the ProJo's biases are showing lately, to a fault.

Romney is coming unglued and we're seeing inside him. Americans don't like what they see. He's not a leader. He's not that smart. He's a little man bent on becoming president and that just isn't good enough.

Americans wanted Obama. They got him. He's not perfect. But he's not Romney. We'll have him again because Obama has BECOME a GREAT President.

Romney does not have that ability and his ego stands in the way of changing. Sorry, Mitt, you don't get my vote.

Unglued huh?

Nationally, Real Clear Politics has Obama ahead by only three points (average of all polls).

That is far from unglued. That is pretty much a dead heat.

Except here in Rhode Island, the state that is dead last in everything. Here in the Democratic wasteland we have created, Obama will win by a landslide.

How did that work for us in the last four years?

Losers.

Seems to be a dead heat but the economy and fuel prices will push people away from Obama . The answers provided by Romney in the debates will make Obama look like a fool. We are seeing the cause and effect of the ultra liberal agenda in America. The promise of a new beginning has become the age of Tax and Spend. The destruction of our medical system and lack of good jobs will tear down Obama. He had his chance with the fist two years wasted as our country fell deeper it to recession . If he had cut taxes and regulations on drilling we would have came out of it. By this time in Reagon's Administration he had created over seven million jobs and cut the size of Government considerably . This amateur should be put out of office .

Mr. Sousa-In your hundreds of posts attacking President Obama and praising teabagger Romney, all you ever talk about is the economy. While the economy is surely an important issue in the presidential election, there are many more important issues that this election will affect, such as a woman's right to choose, affirmative action, and equal rights for same sex couples, all issues on which Romney fails miserably.

It would be interesting to hear your opinions on these issues, especially due to the fact you are a candidate for elected office.

The readers anxiously await your response Mr. Sousa.

Drilling, permits and exploration are all increased under the Obama administration.

"If he had cut taxes and regulations on drilling we would have came out of it."
If you're talking about the process known as fracking - the capturing of waste byproducts and disposal of waste water are precautions, for anyone that remembers Love Canal, sensible. You have heard of the Nu-Chrome mess in
neighboring FR, haven't you Joe?

"We are seeing the cause and effect of the ultra liberal agenda in America."
You mean, polluters won't be tolerated - they dump and run.

"This amateur should be put out of office."
How you must hate this educated black man.

It's pathetic.

Gov. Romney could stand at the podium and speak in tongues and dribble for an hour and Joe and I have already declared him the debate winner. Therefore, there is no need for anyone to watch.

Does Governor Romney drink Schlitz or Gansett?

The Democrats are coming unglued. Look no further than Chicago for proof. Even the unions are turning against them. Teachers there are making an average of $76,000 before benefits and were just offered pay increases that would increase that by 16% and they still turned it down. Now Rahm, Obama's former chief of staff, is taking them to court. Unions are supposed to be the Democrats bread and butter.

Where is all the "Hope" and "Change" we were promised? It sure feels like more of the same to me.

You do remember what happened in Wisconsin, under Republican auspice?
It seems that a surviving Union is a hopeful sign.

"Even the unions are turning against them."
Umm... no, Ted.

Current polls have Obama likely to carry Michigan.

Now people who hate unions are likely to vote for Romney, that's true.

But Unions voting against Obama?

They've been working on trying to kill the economy over there for a while now. Look at the boating taxes that they've gone back and forth on over the years. It's almost like they are actively working to identify thriving parts of our economy and they kill them off. But that is what people want and we keep electing them, go figure.

Hey Rene,

You really don't understand this whole Internet machine thingy here now do you?

Having a URL chyron at the end of a video posted to YouTube wasted exactly zero taxpayer dollars and is a clear violation of absolutely nothing at all.

Get a grip dude.

Jeff:

This is the clearest, most effective post yet made in this thread. I agree 100%. As an added bonus, I learned a new word ("chyron").

Thanks and please contribute more often.
