(Syracuse, New York) – I’m on the road again this weekend, but there is no shortage to talk about in the world of politics. One debate is history, with three more to go! Here are my weekly observations:
There You Go, Again! – Ronald Reagan’s famous debate line is worth repeating, but lots of history is worth remembering, too. Mitt Romney certainly had a Reagan-like performance in the first debate Wednesday night, but this is far from over. Debates are tough on incumbents who must defend their record for the first time. Reagan himself had a horrible first debate against Walter Mondale in 1984, only to come back and easily dispatch Mondale in the second debate, on the way to a Reagan landslide in November (see photo). So, Obama supporters know he can give a comeback performance in the second and third debates; and Romney supporters need to know their man is up to the task, but must not to be overconfident in rounds two and three.
Libya – While he hit hard on the economy in the first debate, Romney must now hit hard on Libya during the final two debates. The changing White House story about that tragic event has caused deep concern in the public, and has given Republicans a lot of political ammunition. The worst political wounds are often self-inflicted and from an election year standpoint, the White House handled this poorly and could pay dearly politically.
Unemployment Numbers – The best news for President Obama this week was that unemployment has dropped to 7.8 percent, with one more report out the Friday before Election Day. If I was coaching Obama in the debates, I would advise pounding the number over and over. If I was advising Romney in the debates, I would get away from percentages and use raw numbers. Saying there are 23 million Americans still unemployed, is a lot stronger than calling it 7.8 percent. Yes, it’s nuance, but when you talk in millions, it grabs people’s attention.
Gas Prices – Obama’s big concern now is gas prices. If they continue to trend up sharply, it could hurt him. People always blame the president for such things, even if it’s not his fault. The timing of the spike in prices at the pump couldn’t be worse for Obama right now.
Fudging the Numbers – When unemployment dropped sharply Friday to 7.8 percent, a lot of White House critics – including retired General Electric CEO Jack Welsh – accused the Labor Department of cooking the books. Can that really happen? I have my doubts and here is why. The Labor Department – like many cabinet agencies – is made up of mostly career civil service employees, including many who came in under Republican administrations. To me it would be hard to fudge the numbers without a whistleblower coming forward. In 2004, some Democrats accused the Bush II White House of doing the very same thing – sugar coating weak economic numbers to help reelection. Now talk radio is full of the same chatter. The White House’s loss of credibility on the Libya matter is only fueling doubts about other issues. Still, the 7.8 figure is a net gain for the Obama reelection bid. If he can convince enough people the economy is improving, he wins.
VP Debates – Thursday night Oct. 11, is the vice presidential debate in Kentucky. The Ryan-Biden match up should be entertaining from two men who love to talk endlessly in public. VP debates rarely mean much in the overall picture, but they have had some amusing train wreck-like moments over the past few decades. So, watch for the candidates possibly hitting some potholes this week.
National Polls – Romney definitely got a post-debate bounce. Last week, President Obama’s lead in the Real Clear Politics composite poll was 3.1 percent. Today it is now only 1.4 percent. Another strong debate performance will make this race dead even.
Swing States Tighten – The post-debate bounce has put Mitt Romney in a tie in Florida, Virginia and Colorado. Even if you assume he can win all three, when you add that to his estimated Electoral College total, he only reaches 258, with 270 needed to win. Obama has opened a lead wide enough in Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Ohio, that exceeds the poll’s margin of error, so Nevada and Iowa become even more crucial to Romney. Bottom line: the swing states still trend strongly in Obama’s favor. As I have said before: Romney could win the popular vote, with Obama winning the Electoral College. It’s just that kind of year!

President Obama. He's glib, he's confident, he's got all the requisite skills of a con man. None that are required of a President. He's our first Grifter-in-Chief. But it is a lesson in human nature that so many people are taken in by Obama. I used to think that his election would have one singular and important impact in that it would put to rest that notion that America is a racist nation. Now, I'm not so sure.
After he is soundly defeated by Romney, it will be said that racism in America couldn't be held in check and that was the reason he lost. So, in the end, the Obama presidency will likely have had no positive impact of lasting value for America, and may re-ignite the slander that we are a nation of racists. The only one who can disabuse the world of that lie is Obama himself. The question is; will he?

Mark do live in a fantasy world? Gov Romney still has not given any specifics on would be policies except a $5 trillion tax cut (not paid for) increase in defense spending to unseen levels, flip flop on every other issue and it showed in the debate half the stuff he mentioned was never said on the campaign trail. OBAMA 4 MORE YEARS ;)

Half the stuff he said is in his book that he wrote 3 years ago. Look it up. The reason he is not giving specifics on his spending cuts is because of the unpopularity of cutting things. He mentioned cutting PBS funding and look how that turned out. Imagine what would happen if he told you that he is cutting the First Time Homebuyer credit. Not so popular for people about to buy a home.
Still Hope
1:52 pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2012
Oh, I forgot to mention why he would cut that:
"And there is more. In a separate study, the Government Accountability Office concluded that in 2008-2009 more than 25,000 credits[$9000 per credit] were claimed by people who reported no income and another 165,000 by those earning $25,000 or less. Care to wager how long it will be before those houses end up in foreclosure? If they were ever actually purchased, that is." -Taxpolicycenter.org
This is a $1,700,000,000 per year loophole. That's 1.7 Billion per year in fraud. Mitt's tax cuts are for $5 trillion over 10 years, so basically $500 billion per year. I just showed you one way to cut $2 billion from one instance of fraud alone. Plenty more where that came from.

And that's perfectly legal as long as he notifies the IRS. Don't you think President Obama instructed the IRS to investigate Romney's tax filings? “People who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force.”
Before we get too excited about a 7.8% unemployment rate, here’s where the jobs data comes from:
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (part of the Labor Department) has Census Workers make two surveys, one of businesses and one of about 60,000 households. In both surveys, the data are not precise and are regularly revised.
It’s well worth a few minutes to read the following (that’s where the quote, above came from) from the “Bureau”:

What facts? Over the last 10 years most surveys and telephone polls have been skewed. How come? Because 60-70% of individuals age 18-35 do not have home phones. Any worthwhile survey will either have a reliable cell phone list or will just be conducted in person. Unfortunately, most survey do neither. Also factor in how the family structure is set up nowadays, with more adult children living at home longer and many elderly being put in homes. These important details make for interesting results with regard to "household statuses".
I think it is common knowledge that, with regard to society issues, most young adults tend to be more liberal than not. So when you read polling results, ask yourself: what would the real numbers be if they didn't neglect an entire generation.
So be careful looking for your "facts".

I do think that when Romney spoke about the 47 or 49 percent, he meant (besides retired people who deserve us to support them) that there are 47 to 49 percent of voters who are ignorant and are on public assistance--welfare, food stamps, medicaid, and SSI recipients who receive a check from the government because they have anxiety. Doesn't everybody have anxiety? And if he did mean these people, he is right, they won't vote. They are too lazy.

You are confusing debt with deficit. Clinton did not pay down the debt although he did get rid of the deficit. He did not need one republican vote to get things passed. He still has a majority in the senate and he has't passed a budget in 4 years. He has submitted a budget each year, and they have all been voted down with not one senator or congressman voting in favor. 535 to 0 4 years in a row. Guess the dems are dragging their feet too.

Katherine, you are confusing fact with fantasy. Obama did not have a "big majority in congress for the first two years". Because of the absence of Kenedy for health issues, Franken not being appointed because of legal roadblocks put up by the republican party, and one or two others, there was only a filibuster proof majority for a total of 4 months. What happened to bills that could be filibustered ? ... they were filibustered. You are also mistaken in that Obama has "added" 6 trillion in debt. He may be responsible for 6T, but that cost also includes Bushes war costs that went unpaid. As for the budget, you are correct, there hasn't been a new budget passed, that's because when it became obvious that there were impasses in the budget procedure the Democrats and Republicans agreed on a budget resolution http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:S.Con.Res13: which ensured that funding would be continued through 2014 while they "attempt" to work things out.

I voted for Clinton twice, but his record needs to be put into perspective to what he had that no other president had:
- Cheap oil at around $11 per barrel thanks to a grateful Kuwait,
- Low interest rates,
- The Y2K computer build out which drove the tech bubble during his term.
- The corresponding internet explosion from 1990 to 2000,
- No wars.
- Full employment supported by high tech wages.
Clinton had nothing to do with any of the above. His greatest accomplishment may have been to remain as the Commander in Chief of Fund Raising.

At the beginning when everyone got together to discuss Obama care the republicans made suggestions he listened and then said "I won." Yes, he won but historically he must work with the congress not dismiss them. Other presidents have worked with a congress of the other party but not him. And he did have a majority in both houses. Pam:
I'm retired military w/ 30+ yrs and over 4 of them out of my country overseas. I've dealt with all of the services PAO (public affairs office) which is a journalist based military occupation specialty and they do a fair job. I think the Patch is pretty far left in their philosophy since I've seen similar incidents. If there is a conservative counter to an insulting uber liberal comment, then your likely to have it edited or taken off..even if the comment were a simple counter! The editors will say otherwise because they have to. I know the drill. But to the editors "you're welcome" for the freedom to edit your blogs etc.

"I think the Patch is pretty far left in their philosophy since I've seen similar incidents. If there is a conservative counter to an insulting uber liberal comment, then your likely to have it edited or taken off..even if the comment were a simple counter! "
This is a well-moderated board that has clear terms of service. Too many comment pages are dominated by conservative voices that gather to have dissent expunged.
The point? Things were different "in your day", stress on that isn't tomorrow.
What you, and other persistent, repugnant reposters of Fox propaganda are sensing is a growing resentment from cynics that don't believe the party line being fed to us from both sides.
Start chiming in on real issues, like the erosion of the Bill of Rights and the gaping maw of the Military/Industrial complex and you'll get your say. Parrot the latest missive from Roger Ailes and NewsCorp and you're fair game.
You're being USED, LRI.
Emphasis on the "retired" descriptor = out of touch with today.

"You can't have a conversation with a Liberal."
Probably because they're laughing out loud at little gems like this;
"VP BiteMe thinks..."
What are you, twelve?
Debate and conversation imply common usage of the same language, reliance on facts and avoidance of fallacy in argument. You might brush up on those, Johnny.

There are intellectuals in the Republican party, they're just being hounded out.
Olympia Snow, a shoe-in for re-election was forced to retire.
It's an obvious attempt by big money interests to install their puppets, and it's working. http://www.creators.com/opinion/froma-harrop/the-grand-old-party-s-breaking-up.html

"leave ri"-Why don't you do the state a favor and live up to your screen name, if you dislike things here so much. Instead of spewing your teabagger trash all over this website, why don't you summon up some courage and leave the state?
The reason you won't do that is pretty simple-you're a bored lonely coward, who has nothing better to do than spread your right wing teabagger trash all over this website.
Time for you to find a hobby "leave ri"

Tiverton..I have 30+ years in the military with 4 + out of this country deployed. How many do you have? If none I'll dismiss you as a liberal leacher. I already work and lease out of state. Just waiting for the wife to accept the out of state job offer to sell the house. All the kids and their families have left out of state also...so I suggest you go to Sectrum India, buy your hemp shirt and head to San Francisco..

Mr. Biden’s got some big white teeth, there,
& a wiggle in his talk
& a giggle in his talk.
It was distracting.
We almost didn’t catch his lies & lack of details.
Almost.
Obamacare cost? No details from Biden. Jobs lost because businesses don’t want to hire & be subject to Obamacare? No details from Biden. Domestic economic plan? No details from Biden. Biden save Medicare? How? Mr. Obama said by reducing health care costs, but Obamacare will INCREASE costs even more than over the past 4 years.
Troops out in 2014-no matter what?! Very irresponsible statement that jeopardizes our national security.
There’s more (e.g., Biden obviously doesn’t understand Supply Side Economics),
but the worst, worst, worst thing of all…
the biggest, baddest lies of all?
Libya.
Biden expects us to believe his malarkey that the Obama administration did not know that the Americans at the US Embassy in Libya requested more security. (Liar.)
Then, Biden said, “The military says we need a smaller, leaner army.”
Biden spoke confidently about the Iran nuclear threat – he seems to think he knows more about Iran’s timetable than anyone else does.
So Mr. Biden thinks he has his finger on the pulse of the US Army, the US military needs and Iran’s nuclear-weapon-development timetable,
but he had NO IDEA that the US Embassy in Libya needed some security?
Hard to believe.
It’s a big lie.
“Who do you trust?”
Not Obama & Biden.

Mr. Biden is ....and I stress...is the Vice President and he is far more informed than you or I. Your information is based on hearsay from the right wing pundits....his is based on cogent information from our 'national security' agencies. You seem to be grasping at straws.....as they fly by in the wind

mike..
I agree that Biden would have access to classified information and maybe "more of it". Now to say the info was mismanaged could be inferred easily since they stumbled for a week. If the information they received from their intellegence sources (I suspect that's what you meant by "security agencies") was bad then I expect there to be some openings in the upper level of the respective agency (s) of bad info. In the point of how much classified info Biden knows though I agree it's more than we do at any given moment. The Executive branch staff gets a dailey update brief alternately called (BUB for battle update brief) or TUB for tactical update brief) usually during one of the first three in the a.m.

It would be easy to cast blame on either the admin for ignoring request or the House for cutting funding....probably...unfortunately ...a lot of both...a minimum of resources and not enough communication. I also do believe that in a country such as Libya ...in flux and not totally coherent in its' security....any focused 'terrorist' group could pull something like this off 90% of the time...sorry to say but put yourself there.

Mike..I've been to northern Africa for about a year (not since 2006 though) and you hit right..it could have been pulled off a majority of the time (after doing predeployment site surveys I wouldn't say 90%)..with just that piece of the intell picture known and with their pattern analysis wheel the State Dept dropped the ball..not specifically a single person..but through vicarious liabilty on failed action and leadership skills. There are also other (many other but smaller in group sizes) terror org there such as the AIAI whhich are mostly Somali based but they also have backing..I'll give you an unclassified brief over beer some day..

Does anyone remember the children's book "The puppy who chased the sun" with the characters "Toothy Perkins" and "No Tail Ryan"
Watching a split screen of "Toothy" and "No Tail" last night was distracting at best.
The children's book was more interesting.
The network should be embarrassed at the outcome.

Kidding aside there has to be some kind of venue for non affiliated moderators that can take charge of the uncontrollable ticks and fits by any of the debators. Savy?
