Custom House Coffee, with locations in Portsmouth and Middletown, and a soon-to-open shop in Fall River, MA, is seeking to serve alcohol at its Clock Tower Square location.
One Portsmouth coffee shop is seeking to add shots other than espresso to its menu. The owners of Custom House Coffee, which celebrated its 10th business anniversary last Friday, want to serve alcohol at its Portsmouth shop. The store's owners are seeking to secure a liquor license for the King Charles Drive and West Main Road location. However, the King's Grant Fellowship church across the street might prevent establishing a liquor license at this shop. State law prohibits any establishment to serve liquor within 200 feet of a church. In a mailing sent to customers this week, the owners say the interest in a liquor license is a reaction to the "poor economy." "Unfortunately, we have not been immune to the poor economy over the past …

The third wind turbine in town and fourth on Aquidneck Island is turning its blades and generating electricity, after being constructed by a Middletown-based company.
The Hodges Badge Co. wind turbine might have seen like a stagnant, steel maypole for the past few months, but as of Monday morning, the giant in the sky began to finally turn its blades. "I am pleased to report that our turbine is up and running as of this morning," wrote Hodges Badge President Rick Hodges in an e-mail Monday of the turbine built by Middletown-based Rhode Island Wind Power. "Actually, it was ready to run last Friday, but there wasn’t enough wind to turn the blades over the weekend. "I expect that there will be a few more shutdowns as we resolve some teething issues, but it will generally be in automatic operation going forward, meaning that it will turn into the wind by itself, and start and stop as the wind comes and …

US Labor Department’s OSHA proposes more than $117,000 in fines to Newport contractor for cave-in hazards at a Middletown work site.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed fines totaling $117,740 against Newport-based Raymond J. Cawley Contracting Inc. for allowing cave-in and other hazards while workers were excavating at 28 W. Main Road in Middletown to replace a sewer line. An OSHA inspection found two workers in an eight-foot-deep trench improperly shored or sloped to prevent sidewalls from caving in. Excavated materials were placed at the edge of the trench, which also lacked a sufficiently tall ladder that workers could use to exit swiftly and safely. Additionally, the workers were not wearing protective helmets, which exposed them to being struck by an operating backhoe’s bucket and the material falling out of …
