Middletown's coastline offers great game fishing. Columnist Ray Dutra looks closer beneath the surface. Do you have a fish tale to tell, or know where the fish are biting? Email Ray.
Cooler Waters Brings Fall Run The Fall Run could mean big fish and lots of them.  The big Bluefish make their appearance and the Stripers are equally active. Fishing projections from The Saltwater Edge and Sam's Bait and Tackle suggest a delay in the action on the water as the fall run shifts into gear.  Peter Jenkins, owner of The Saltwater Edge, says the "Fall Run" can be among the best of the seasons.  Charter boat Captain BJ Silvia, of Flippin' Out Fishing Charters, also mentioned that the fall run offers some of the best fishing of the year.   However, the affects of recent storms like …
A week-long fishing tournament across Aquidneck Island kicked off Friday as scheduled to benefit the local family of a fallen soldier killed in Iraq. The 5th Annual Staff Sergeant Christopher Potts Fishing Tournament began Friday, September 3at 6 pm and will end at 10 am on Saturday, September 11, with a finale to include a free cookout at the Portuguese American Club in Portsmouth and live music featuring Blurred Vision from 1-5 pm. Middletown bait and tackle shops, including The Saltwater Edge and Sam's Bait and Tackle, have been very active in getting the word out to all local fishermen to…
Sure, this summer it's been a bit slower for the Blues and Stripers, but I am glad to report there are still plenty of fish to be caught off the shores of Middletown.  On a recent fishing trip, my son Jason and his girlfriend joined her family aboard  the Borden's 22-foot Striper motorboat. In the Rhode Island Sound near Block Island, they found themselves in waters that were a bit rough with 5- to 8-foot swells. They had started at 6:30 am and, after 4 ½ hours, had only caught two fluke, so there were no complaints when it was decided to head back to the harbor to drop off Mr. Borden's son, …
Peter Graeber, General Manager of Middletown's Saltwater Edge Fishing Co., says the fishing has been slow for big bluefish this year.  Whether the customers he sees in the store had been fishing for bluefish, or out for striped bass, the reports all tell us bluefish were barely encountered.  Some seasons the blues arrive early, in big numbers, and generous sizes.  However, according to Mr. Graeber the bluefish season is cyclical and abundant years vary.  I've heard that off-shore fishing trawlers take the baitfish that would normally enter the bay and fuel the bluefish schools.  No doubt the …
It's been a tough season for stripers due to an unusually hot summer, but at least local anglers looking for more opportunities can take advantage of night fishing at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. The Point, a 242-acre peninsula between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound, boasts a long and proud history of excellent saltwater fishing. Eight marked access points ring the rocky shoreline, and there are no limitations on where you choose to fish, or how many people use the sites. The Point attracts fishermen from all over the state, as well as Massachusetts, who typically live …
