Locally, Romney won with 64 percent of the vote.
Mitt Romney looked certain to continue his march toward a showdown with President Barack Obama, leading Rhode Island in Tuesday’s primary with 63 percent of the statewide vote. That was with 96 percent of districts reporting as of 10:15 p.m., according to Secretary of State Ralph Mollis's election results web page. Locally, Romney won the Middletown vote with 64 percent, or 181 of the votes. The former Massachusetts governor defeated Ron Paul, the closest challenger, who received 20.1 percent of the vote—57 votes total— in Middletown. In one of the final contests of the 2012 Presidential race, Rhode Island holds its primary vote today, Apr. 24. Here's a quick run-down of the primary, including where you can find your local polling place: Where do I vote? Rhode Island Secretary of State Ralph Mollis's office mantains a Voter Information Center polling place search website, where voters can find where to vote. Middletown is in Congressional District 1, so all voters will have the same ballot, which the Secretary of State's office has posted here: 2012 Presidential Primary Ballot. What's the deal? A primary is one state's vote for candidates who are running for president, prior to the general election in November. It's also a vote for delegates to their respective parties…

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding voters to be prepared for changes at the polls during Tuesday’s presidential primary elections.
This year, Middletown is opening just two polling places: Gaudet School, 1113 Aquidneck Ave., and Town Hall, 350 East Main Rd. "It is very likely you will have a different polling place on Tuesday than the last time you voted," said Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis. "Just 135 polling places will be open. More than 500 were open for the last statewide election in November 2010." Another change this year is the closing time, which is 8 p.m. In past election years, polls closed at 9 p.m. Under the state’s new Voter ID law, poll workers will ask voters for ID for the first time. Identifications such as a Rhode Island driver's license, RIPTA bus pass, college ID or Social Security card will be accepted. "The perception that identity theft …

While politically inclined RI residents can't vote in Tuesday's N.H. Republican primary, here at Patch, we don't think it's right that our friends up north have all the January fun. We want to know: who would you vote for? The Republican race for a presidential candidate is heating up. The New Hampshire primary is under way and the caucus in Iowa slimmed down the potential Presidential nominations with Michele Bachmann dropping out the race after getting just 5 percent of the vote (6,073 ballots). Mitt Romney took the caucus with a needle-thin win over Rick Santorum, gathering just eight more ballots. Romney had 24.6 percent of the vote (30,015 ballots) with Santorum in a surprising second with 24.5 percent (30,007 ballots). Both Newt …

In hopes of ending a four-year rift between two factions, the Democratic Town Committee has chosen Robert Sylvia as chairman, succeeding the late David Lavine.
The new face of Middletown’s Democratic Town Committee is a familiar face — one that party loyalists hope will unite and reinvigorate the fractured local base in time for the 2012 election. Former Town Councilor Robert Sylvia, who did not seek re-election in November after serving two terms, was elected as the new Middletown Town Committee chairman during a reorganizational meeting held Thursday, Jan. 27. He succeeds the late David Lavine, who died on Dec. 13 following a long-term illness. The newly reorganized Middletown Democratic Town Committee also includes: 1st Vice Chairperson and Treasurer Gladys Lavine, 2nd Vice Chairperson state Sen. Lou DiPalma, and Secretary Kellie E. DiPalma. Sylvia's uncontested appointment to lead the town’s …

Rhode Island’s 58th governor promises to rescind E-verify and push for marriage equality.
Promising to usher in a new era of political cooperation and establish a more "civil state," Lincoln D. Chafee accepted the oath of office Tuesday afternoon, becoming Rhode Island's 58th governor. Repeatedly invoking the memory of state founder Roger Williams throughout his inaugural address, Chafee urged fellow political leaders and residents to reaffirm Williams' vision of a "vibrant, diverse community that is free of political, cultural and ethnic division." In that vein, Chafee announced his first official act as governor will be to rescind the E-verify executive order former Gov. Donald Carcieri enacted. As Carcieri looked on, Chafee lamented the impact his predecessor's order — which required employers to check the immigration status…

Here's what happened in Middletown the week of Sunday, Nov. 14 to Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010.
Looking to spend Sunday catching up on local news? Last week's news saw a fallen local hero laid to rest, the re-organization of the Town Council with newly elected members taking the helm, the library's flooded floor reconstruction completed, lots happening at the schools, the return of the U.S. Coast Guard Ship Willow and the anticipated return of St. George's Geronimo after seven weeks at sea. Sadly on Friday, Middletown witnessed the shooting death of a 31-year-old local man in Fall River, MA and that case was still under investigation with two suspects in custody at press time. This week, attention turns to celebrating Thanksgiving and gratitude, Middletown's chocolate drive for troops in Afghanistan featured on NBC national news, the…
