The low\, shrubby vegetation found on Plum Island offers birds many feeding opportunities and protection from the elements. \; The Park er River National Wildlife Refuge protects three-fourths of the island a nd includes 6.5 miles of sandy beach\, approximately 3\,000 acres of sal t marsh\, three managed fresh water impediments\, and one of the few uns poiled dune-beach complexes still existing in the Northeast. Located alo ng the Atlantic Flyway\, Plum Island is of special significance to water fowl\, hawks\, warblers\, and shorebirds\, including the federally threa tened piping plover.
