Bridge Toll Fight, Weekend in Sight

Your Friday edition of news and notes about Middletown.

As the Bridge Spans: There's yet another wrinkle to the ongoing bridge toll controversy — the chairman of the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority says the agency may have to transfer ownership of the bridges back to the state if a planned toll doesn't raise enough money for maintenance. Residents have made their opposition clear — and they're planning to protest the Sakonnet Bridge toll on Sunday.

Weekend Agenda:
With the weekend coming up and great weather expected, check out our list of what's happening around Middletown this weekend, including concerts, improv, an art auction, and the Newport Storm Luau.

Huge Yard Sale: The Balfour Beatty Communities, including Greene Lane and Coddington Cove in Middletown, are hosting a community yard sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cruise by and see what kind of bargain you can find. Call Kristen Connor at (401) 846-8877 for more details.

In Case You Missed It: A bit of relief for Newport Naval base civilian employees this week, as the Department of Defense has backed off a previous requirement for 11 furlough days. Workers must now complete six unpaid days off by Sept. 30 [if they haven't taken them by Aug. 17, which had been a previous requirement].

Enjoy It: More spectacular weather expected for Friday, with sunny skies and temps in the 70s. No rain expected through at least Monday.
