'Christmas in August': A bit of relief for Newport Naval base civilian employees this week, as the Department of Defense has backed off a previous requirement for 11 furlough days. Workers must now complete six unpaid days off by Sept. 30 [if they haven't taken them by Aug. 17, which had been a previous requirement].

Weekend Laughs: The Newport Summer Concert Series continues on Friday with Katt Williams for a special 7 p.m. show and Ron White on Sunday. Online tickets available. Shows are 16+. Prices are $56.70 and $66.70 [which includes Ticketmaster fees] for Katt Williams and $49.70 ad $61.70 for Ron White. 

Kid Hit, Man Nabbed: Middletown Police this week reported the arrest of an 18-year-old man after officers were told that he'd assaulted a 12-year-old and hit him with his car. The suspect said he put the kid in a headlock, but didn't use the car to hit him.

Flick by the Beach: newportFILM Outdoors hosts a drive-in movie at Easton's Beach on Thursday night. Lot opens at 6 p.m., film around 8. Movie is "Summit." $5 per person suggested donation. The newportFILM website has more info.
