Gaudet Middle School Wins Major Award at Sunday's First Lego League

The Joseph H. Gaudet Middle School Robotics team won a major award this past Sunday while competing at the First Lego League Qualifying Round at Salve Regina University.

Students from across the state of Rhode Island arrived at 7:30am, this past Sunday, in the hopes that all of their months of hard work had paid off.  Their goal – a bid to the State Championships in January.

The eleven students from Gaudet are part of the First Lego League (FLL) team at the middle school.  The students range in grades from fifth through eighth and have been working for the last four months - after school, nights and weekends.

Their goal is to qualify for the FLL State Championships at Roger Williams University and potentially win a $5000.00 per year scholarship (for four years) to attend Roger Williams.

The First Lego League  “…is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills.”

On this day the students of Team GSL(Gaudet Science Laboratories) took their robot, named “Tomas”, to Salve to compete in a Robotics Game and to the Robot Design demonstrations (each key components to the overall score as well as a determining factor in advancement to the state championships.

During the Robot Design demonstration, the students achieved high marks and praise from judges for their use of parts, their strategies for the robot game, their programming and the overall suitability of their robot for this year’s game.

In the end, their hard work paid off with a first place trophy for Robot Design – beating out seventeen other teams.

“Tomas” the Robot did not disappoint either, earning a fourth place overall in the robot game.

Throughout the days events all of the competitors acted like “gracious professionals” by helping other teams in need, exhibiting good sportsmanship and working hard.  They learned much about Robotics and the STEM fields,  and…had tons of fun.  A very special thank you to our sponsors - Cody Shack and Cody Shack Barbecue Sauce.
