Health Dept. Warns More Middletown Residents to Get Wells Tested

Elevated nitrogen levels were detected in even more areas in Middletown, the state Department of Health announced.

The state Department of Health has expanded its warning to Middletown residents with well water to get their wells tested.

Last week, the health department said that a water sample taken from a residential well on Wapping Road was found to have nitrate levels above acceptable standards.

Since then, the health department has received additional samples from area wells and they also showed elevated nitrate levels.

That means many more residents are urged to get their water tested and the health department said the following streets are affected:

Baldwin Road
Bartlett Road
Little Creek Lane
Peckham Lane
Pippin Road
Porter Road
Riverview Avenue
Russett Avenue
Sakonnet Terrace
Wapping Road

Nitrate levels change seasonally and can be related to septic systems, animal waste and lawn and garden fertilizer use in addition to runoff. All private well owners are urged to get tested at least once a year.
