Where Are Middletown's Most Ignored Stop Signs?

Stop signs are not optional, but they're sometimes treated as if they are.

There are hundreds of stop signs in Middletown, but all too often, they are overlooked when drivers are in a rush.

We have all seen it and probably many would admit of a stop sign roll-through at one point in time.

Do you know of a location where a stop sign is frequently rolled through or ignored?

Share where it is in the comments section, below.

Are you kidding me? It's not just the stop signs...it's also the traffic lights and "yield" signs....People are not paying attention; they are in a hurry; they are greedy; and many are gabbing away on their cell phones. Oh, and also NOT driving 25 or 35 miles per hour.....It is a huge safety problem on Aquideck Island.

Miantonomi and N. Fenner/Fenner Ave! Traffic on Miantonomi rolls right across - I use this intersection every day and the only way to get through is to proceed slowly and hope for the best.

The only time most people "stop" at stop signs is when the alternative is to hit or be hit!!! Many aggressive drivers look you in the eye and barely slow down, almost daring you to try and beat them!!! It's not just Middletown... people everywhere seem to be in too much of a hurry to get wherever it is they're going. I doubt there is anything that can be done. Age or gender doesn't seem to be a factor... all ages and both men and women do it... I have even had people honk their horns when I come to a complete stop!!! I'm just more cautious when I approach an intersection!! Traffic lights are also ignored.....

Without a doubt, agree with Kristin W. Miantonomi and Fenner in front of Carriage House Inn is by far the most dangerous.

The stop sign at Paul Ave. and High St. appears to be invisible to far too many drivers. Thanks to the Middletown Police for their frequent "stakeouts" and apprehension of these menaces!

The stop ,with accompanied handicapped child sign on High Street at the bottom of Paul Ave. is a favorite of "stop hoppers." I is equally well known by the Police who catch many offenders during their welcomed stake outs. Unfotunately they cannot be there at all times as I have even witnessed (and reported) an 18 ton home heating oil truck blow through this stop.

Corner of Evergreen Avenue and Lindren Streets. It is not the stop sign which is the problem. It's the hedges that practically cover the STOP sign. The inconsiderate homeowners have been asked to please cut their never hedges, but to no avail. Shame, shame.

Turner and Wyatt...and just wait until school starts up then let the fun begin......

My pet peeve is how many times a car will come into my lane of travel to go around someone on a bike, or jogging, etc. If I remember correctly from my driver's ed classes a lifetime ago, if something is in your path, you are supposed to yeild to oncoming traffic until safe to pass! I have been forced nearly off the road just about every day this summer, espcially on 3rd Beach Road!
Karen B August 24, 2012 at 02:33 PM
Maple and Sherman, constantly. The scary thing is, that intersection is a school bus stop and people speed on Maple all the time.
Kim August 24, 2012 at 02:44 PM
I am with Kristin and Troy...Miantonomi and Fenner/N. Fenner...people on Miantonomi feel that they have the right of way and you usually have to wait for 2-3 cars to pass through if you are on the Fenner sides of the signs.
Timothy Sant August 24, 2012 at 02:48 PM
I definitely agree that the one at Miantonomi and Fenner is the most ignore, I think some people see it as 2 cars at a time can go through, it is very dangerous! The other one that I see people go right through is the one at Eustis and Bliss Road. It's like it isn't even there.

So you mean STOP doesn't stand for "slightly tap on pedal"? My favorite is on Access road. The light for Northgate Apartments. I watched a man with 3 kids in the car nearly hit a bicyle rider the other day. Never stopped didnt even flinch

sherman lane and maple ave.

I second this one. I've been nearly run over dozens of times at this intersection when out for a run.

The end of Crescent Road and Briarwood Avenue in front of Country Liquor Mart. The drivers coming out of Crescent hazardly dodge onto Aquidneck Avenue without looking for oncoming traffic pulling up Briarwood off Aquidneck. They also frequently disregard the car at the Briarwood stop sign when it arrives first and has the right of way. I also agree with Jill that drivers who have an obstruction in their path tend to take the right of way around the obstruction instead of waiting for the oncoming traffic in the clear lane to pass. It seems everyone is in a hurry to go essentially "nowhere".

they don't call it the "Rhode Island Slide" for nothin'

CHASE'S LANE and CASEY. All the people taking that short cut to go into the Navy property drive way too fast and almost ALWAYS fly right through that stop sign. I still won't let my daughter cross that street by herself to catch the bus. My husband or I will go to work late just to bring her.

One of many STOP Signs is located Above Christmas Tree Shop parking lot at Middletown Post office Hill intersection. Today's Road Design leads to not only contributing to but even induced increased dangerous behaviors, with associated harm to many road users & bystanders.. More police with tasers and RADAR guns cannot mitigate the problems made worst by our compromised at any speed highway network. Yes, today's reality poorly designed & maintained roads and bridges at the town & State jurisdictions. In RI we can pay no more but we must set an expectation of better at a lower cost. We must return to spending money on the fundamentals with improved quality and stand down from the over reach resulting from increased physical government at all levels Make East and West Main road single lane with real road shoulder and perhaps even real road drainage! Yes, center turn lane like Rt 2 in NK & EG. Yes We Need to realize a reality check and by design just S L O W T H I N G S D O W N. We are not and should not be a limited access expressway. Why not cameras at all state Highway traffic signals & advertise it far and wide?

green end and third beach......
marilla van beuren August 26, 2012 at 01:24 AM
One question: Is it not a law that one must stop at a stop sign? Otherwise you are breaking the law & must pay the price. In stead of all the chatter, how about more police surveillance at offending locations? A cruiser not easily seen from a distance is even better. At least a few people might regain respect for rules.
Dryheave August 26, 2012 at 12:20 PM
a lot of these intersections are poorly designed. Then there are stop signs where there should be NO stop signs. High St. for one. The road is DEAD STRAIGHT boarded on one side by the valley. There is no need for a stop sign there..
Robert E August 26, 2012 at 05:25 PM
Just to the left of your gas pedel is another pedel when you step on it the car comes to a stop. I use mine all the time and never have a problem with stop signs and red lights. If you can't figure that out get off the road.
katyy anne August 26, 2012 at 08:28 PM
