Art Show Includes Works Done Locally at Maher Center

Clients from the , on Aquidneck Ave., in Middletown, are well represented at the Ninth Annual Paul V. Sherlock Memorial Art Show. Held in partnership with the RI State Council on the Arts, the show runs during the months of February and March at the Atrium Gallery, One Capitol Hill, in Providence. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm.

The exhibit honors Paul Sherlock, a man who has had a significant impact on the community of people with disabilities throughout Rhode Island and celebrates his accomplishments by spotlighting the talents of local artists with a wide range of physical, cognitive, and mental health disabilities.

Maher Center clients had the opportunity to express themselves through the artwork they prepared for the exhibit. They worked on individual pieces of art and a collaborative piece that conveys the beauty of spring. “The abilities that our clients demonstrated while preparing their exhibit pieces was outstanding.  I am delighted with the outcome and thrilled to be able to share the works with the community,” stated Teresa Mowery, Art Instructor for the Center.
 
The James L. Maher Center is a nearly sixty-year-old, Newport based not-for-profit dedicated to providing various daily services to nearly 300 individuals with developmental disabilities. Some of these individuals participate in work programs; over 100 receive residential services; almost 90 children benefit from early intervention and literally thousands of people in the East Bay area reach their destinations each year because of RIde transportation services provided under the terms of a contract with the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.
