Tour de Newport, Healing Co-Op Concert Among Final Summer Weekend Happenings

The last summer weekend offers plenty of local activities, local talents and important causes to support, including Sunday's bike Tour de Newport to support the Newport County Community Mental Health Center.

Even as summer winds down, there's no shortage of great events and seasonal things to do, such as Sunday morning's Tour de Newport, to support children who receive services from the Newport County Community Mental Health Center, and Sunday afternoon picnic and concert at the Healing Co-Op to support cancer survivors.

Before summer is gone, here are several great way to support local activities, talents and organizations this weekend:


All Weekend Long Sweet Berry Farm's Pick-Your-Own Season Continues

Peaches, apples and pumpkins are ready right now, and maybe some berries too, say growers. The farm is open from 8 am to 7 pm, rain or shine, through December 31. For more information, please visit the Sweet Berry Farm website

Aquidneck Grower's Market

The Aquidneck Grower's Market is always great to pick up local produce, catch a cookin demo from an area restaurant, and run into friends you know. The market is held at Newport Vineyards & Winery, 909 East Main Road, on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm through October 30, 2010.

Newport International Boat Show

The Newport International Boat Show features everything from single hulls and monohulls, sailboats and power boats, technical devices, boating accessories, and gear and more. The event takes place at the Newport Yachting Center and in the Mooring parking lot, as well as along the docks and waterfront from the Newport Yachting Center over to the Newport Harbor Hotel & Marina. As the largest in-water boat show in the northeast and the first big event of the boat show season, Newport is the U.S. launching spot for many 2011 product models. There are over 40 new products this year, and they are easy to spot with special red and blue "New For Newport" balloons overhead their displays. The show is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $18. Children under 12 are free with an adult. Saturday Morning Watch Swimmers Compete at Second Beach

The Tuesday Night Athletic Foundation sponors the annual "New England Open Water Championship & Second Beach Open Water Challenge" sponsored by the Little Rhody Aquatic Club, at Second Beach Saturday morning, beginning at 9 am. The course will begin and finish near the main pavilion on Second Beach.


Saturday Night Catch Local Favorite Milkbread  Over the Bridge

See local band Milkbread this weekend when they play the Wheelhouse Tavern in Narragansett. With local Aquidneck Island roots, Milkbread recently played an impressive set in Middletown and brings together students from the University of Rhode Island. The chosen band name is from the first two words taken off a convenience store sign in Newport, according to their official explanation on their Facebook page. Milkbread plays Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Wheelhouse Tavern in Narragansett. The show starts at 9 pm, 21+. The cover charge is $5.

YMCA Solves 'Date Night' Dilemna with Affordable Saturday Night Childcare

The Newport County YMCA offers an affordable three-hour childcare program one Saturday night a month to give parents time for date night or quiet time.

Tour de Newport to Benefit Children of Newport County Mental Health Centers

Aquidneck Island roads will turn into a race course this Sunday, Sept. 19 at 9 am for the Newport County Community Mental Health Center's (NCCMHC) 2nd Annual Tour de Newport Bike-A-Thon. Participants can choose to tackle the 10-mile, 25-mile, or 45-mile course, all of which begin and end at Rogers High School in Newport. Spectators are welcome to come out and support the expected 150 cyclists along the route. Besides the exciting start and finish, NCCMHC recommends spectators watch from along Ocean Drive or Bellevue Avenue. Participants tackling the 25- and 45-mile courses will also breeze past Third Beach, and those continuing on the 45 mile course will also wind down Boyd's Lane and Burma Road in Portsmouth and through the Naval Base area. Acoustic Eidolon Picnic Concert to Benefit Cancer Support at Healing Co-Op

From noon to 4 pm Sunday, this afternoon event includes a picnic lunch at noon, followed by a 1 pm concert featuring Colorado's amazing duo, Hannah and Joe of Acoustic Eidolon: www.acousticeidolon.com. A silent auction will also take place. Proceeds from this event benefit cancer support programs of The Healing CO-Op, Rhode Island's free nonprofit organization based in Middletown that aimed to celebrate and support the lives of women with cancer and their families since 1996. The Healing Co-Op and event location is 272 Mitchells Lane.  TICKETS: $40 adults,  $30 for seniors and kids under 14,  $10 for kids under 5.
