Get Out! 5 Howling Good Times

A roundup of the best events around to keep your family entertained this weekend.


  • Where/When:
    on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m.
    Why Go:
     Wag Nation sponsors this third annual event which features owners outfitted by Bellevue Avenue boutiques and their four-legged friends. The Potter League for Animals will also offer a training demonstration before the show. Grounds open at 5 p.m. and show starts at 6 p.m. This is one of the few events around in which dogs are encouraged to attend, and treats will be served for both the animals and their human friends.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Why Go: Artists from across the nation will be selling their wares ranging from clothing to photography, and multiple bands will entertain the crowds. Children’s activities and a festival café will also be available all to benefit Looking Upwards.

  • INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP
    Where/When:
    on Sat., Sept. 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Help make our shores more beautiful by helping with a coastal clean-up. All you have to do is show up and they’ll provide the trash bags and gloves. Plus you’ll receive a free t-shirt if you register in advance.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25 from 12 to 4 p.m.
    Why Go: With more than 100 wineries and two dozen chefs as well as seminars and celebrity appearances by famed chefs such as Lidia Bastianich, this wine and food festival has become one of the best around. Go to www.newportmansions.org for more details on the weekend’s events.

  • Where/When:
    on Sat., Sept. 24 at 2 p.m.
    Why Go:  Sankovitch will be on hand to discuss and sign copies of her book, Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Magical Year of Reading which she wrote after pledging to read one book a day for a year while mourning the death of her sister and which explores the power of books.
    Pricing:  Free; Books will be available for purchase through Island Books for $23.99.

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Why Go:
    The kids will love a day full of carnival games, craft vendors, hay rides, a rummage sale, and more.
    Pricing:  Free admission; Rides and games vary in price.
