Get Out! 7 Fall Festivities In and Around Middletown

No shortage of fun this weekend! The Norman Bird Sanctuary Harvest Fair returns, along with Common Fence Music's fall series, an Oktoberfest, the Middletown Rotary Club's annual car show, a new waterfront block party and antiques fair.

Take your pick: Fundraisers, folk music and festivals will keep you busy this weekend. Enjoy!


When/Where: Norman Bird Sanctuary, Middletown, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: This is an annual favorite, an old-fashioned day of fun with food, entertainment, games, children's crafts, pony rides, hayrides, pumpkin painting, face painting, and more.
Pricing: Free admission.


When/Where: Fort Adams State Park, Sunday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Why Go: Presented by the Middletown Rotary Club, this annual event happens on the beautiful north lawn of Historic Fort Adams with hundreds of cars, trucks and vans on display in all their technicolor glory. Pricing: Entrants pay $15 on the day of the event. There's no charge for spectators, but donations will be welcomed as proceeds benefit the Middletown Rotary Club's charities. Canned good donations also will be accepted.

When/Where:  Common Fence Music, 933 Anthony Road, Portsmouth, Saturday, Oct. 1, doors open at 7 p.m.
Why Go: Enjoy sensational young singer/songwriter Antje Duvekot, who emigrated from Germany as a teenager and has since solidified her reputation as one of the folk world's top singer-songwriters.  Right here in Portsmouth!
Pricing: $22 in advance, $25 at the door.

Harvesting the Bounty
When/Where: Friday, Sept. 30, 6 p.m., Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum, 101 Ferry Road, Bristol, 6 p.m.
Why Go:  This gala benefits the URI Master Gardener Association's community gardens, which grow 12,500 pounds of produce for the needy each year. This event is chaired by Tom Gorski of Portsmouth; honorary chairman of the event is Marc Perlman, president of Ocean State Job Lot, which provides thousands of free seed packets to the Master Gardeners each year for distribution to community gardens, schools, senior centers, nursing homes and other groups. The master of ceremonies will be NBC 10 news anchor Gene Valicenti.
Pricing: $75

When/Where: Newport Yachting Center, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1-2, starting at noon each day.
Why Go: It may be October, but it feels like summer - so get out enjoy it at this lively, intereactive waterfront block party - the First Annual Shop & Shop Harborfest. Artisans, strolling entertainment, food, music and a boardwalk of amusements and more.
Pricing: Tickets are $10 each, and children under 12 are FREE with an accompanying adult.

When/Where: Preview party is Friday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m.;  Saturday, the general public is invited from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fort Adams, Newport.
Why Go: What a beautiful setting for an antiques festival! This is a benefit for Fort Adams Trust.  Food and beverages available for purchase.
Pricing: Free to walk around during the public hours.

When/Where: Saturday, Oct. 1, 6 to 9 p.m., St. Barnabas Church Hall, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth.
Why Go:  Happy "Oktober!" The Portsmouth Knights of Columbus Council 3618 host their second annual Oktoberfest with German food, beer, wine and fun for all ages. 
Pricing:  $15 per person or $15 per family.
