Get Out: Growers' Market, ASA Spring Fair, Chowder!

Is that a full weekend schedule we see? Sure is! Summer waits for no calendar on Aquidneck Island.

Here's a  roundup of some best bets to keep the whole family and those out-of-town couch crashers entertained this weekend:


  • Where/When:
    on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Why Go: Saturday marks opening day for the Aquidneck Growers' Market featuring local plants, produce, baked goods, meats, cheeses, and much more.
     Pricing: Free admission

  • Where/When:
    Saturday, June 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
    Why Go: The Newport Restoration Foundation presents a hands-on workshop on how to build and repair the stone walls so commonly found in the area.
     Pricing: $35

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Why Go:  Bring the kids to a jam packed spring fair featuring bounce houses, obstacle courses, games, crafts, face painting, a silent auction, raffle, the Northeast Navy Showband, lots of food, and more.
    Pricing: Free admission

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, June 5 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. or 12 to 1:15 p.m.
    Why Go:  Aquidneck Honey’s beekeeper Jeff Mello will offer a tour of the farm’s beehives and discuss the importance of bees as well as the process of beekeeping. Mello also plans on offering samples of the sweet stuff, served up with johnnycakes.
     Pricing: $10, reservations required.

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Grab your favorite four-legged friend and choose a one or three-mile walk to benefit the Potter League for Animals as they step closer to their goal of raising $82,000 to help their shelter animals. Walk with a team or on your own with your favorite pet or in memory of one. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk starts at noon.
    Pricing: $15 or $30 for families

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, June 4 from 12 to 6 p.m.
    Why Go: Feast on all-you-can-eat samples of chowder from chefs as far as away as the Florida Keys. Let your vote be heard by choosing your favorite in the categories of Clam, Seafood, and Creative. Plus, listen to three stages of island music, enjoy kids’ activities and you can even try your hand, or should we say mouth, at the Clamcake Eating Challenge.
    Pricing: $25; Children under 12 admitted free with an adult.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Why Go:  Bring the kids to climb through the Touch-a-Truck Event along with a full range of activities focused on a theme of health, wellness, nutrition and fitness.
