Get Out: Police Parade, Master Gardeners Offer Free Soil Testing

A roundup of the best events this weekend to keep your family entertained and safe.

Here's a look at the days and weekend ahead, including how to catch the Royal Wedding in style very early Friday:


  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    Why Go:  If you are ready to plant your garden and aren’t sure where to begin or have questions about what plants will grow best in your soil, bring a sample of it to Prescott Farm where volunteers from the URI Master Gardener’s Program will be on hand to answer questions and do soil testing.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    Why Go: The Middletown Substance Abuse and Prevention Task Force along with the Middletown Police Department will be collecting any excess medications prescribed to humans, farm animals or pets with the purpose of properly disposing of them to protect the environment and preventing children from getting a hold of them.

  • Where/When:
    on Friday, April 29 at 5 a.m.
    Why Go: If you are going to get up that early to watch the Royal Wedding you might as well do it in style. A breakfast of pastries, fruit, yogurt, juice, coffee, and tea will be served at 5 a.m. followed by the wedding ceremony at 6 a.m. It’s My Party will be offering wedding dress and cake cookies.
    Pricing: $15; Reservations requested.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m.
    Why Go: Pruitt Chiropractic will be organizing a beach and cliff walk clean up for anyone interested in making these local attractions cleaner places for all to enjoy. Trash bags will be provided, and all who participate will receive a screening for a spinal screening/evaluation.

  • Where/When:
    Stanford White Casino Theater on Saturday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m.
    Why Go: will return to the spot where they had their first public performance in 1982 for a special presentation that discusses the parallels between dance and architecture and how the company has used architecture in its performances. The performance will also include Mikhi Olsen’s latest ballet “Struggle for Comfort” and Colin Connor’s “Bodies of Water.” A champagne reception will kick-off the event at 6:30 p.m.

  • Where/When:
    to on Sunday, May 1 from 11:50 a.m.
    Why Go:
    Over 4,000 participants will parade 1.6 miles in front of as many as 70,000 spectators to commemorate National Police Week and honor the fallen police officers who died in the line of duty in 2010. A favorite annual event in the community among children and adults alike.
