Potter League 'Yappy Hour' Draws Crowd to Top of Newport

An enthusiastic crowd turned out for the recent cocktail hour reception held at the Viking Hotel in Newport to benefit the Potter League for Animals.

A crowd of Potter League supporters gathered atop the Hotel Viking Tuesday night for a small benefit in honor of the island's only animal shelter.

While the Potter League for Animals has several large fundraisers each year, including its "Have a Heart Cocktail Party" and the "Heart & Soul Walk for Animals," smaller events such as this one are also important for raising funds to support the approximately 2,000 dogs, cats and small animals that pass through the shelter each year.

More than 70 people gathered at the Hotel Viking's Top of Newport bar for the event. According to the Potter League's Executive Director, Christie Smith, the Hotel Viking approached the Potter League back in March and offered to host this event. The nonprofit happily accepted the invitation, she said.

Mother Nature fully cooperated Tuesday in providing a beautiful evening for the event, which included wine, light fare, music by Robert Black and a spectacular view. Guests gathered informally around tables on the rooftop deck, overlooking the serene harbor on one side  and the bustle of Bellevue Avenue (which appears much calmer from the 4th floor) on the other. They also made sure to stop by and check out the photo entries for Most Lovable Pet contest.
