Viewfinder: Middletown Celebrates Last Summer Hurrahs

The last community bonfire of this summer and a NewportFILM screening at the Norman Bird Sanctuary Thursday night ushered in Labor Day Weekend before the kids go back to school.

The Town of Middletown hosted a wonderful end-of-summer dinner on Second Beach Thursday night. Many members of the Middletown Town Council and of the various town boards and commissions enjoyed a full spread before walking over to the roaring bonfire set up on the beach by the

Families came with picnic baskets overflowing with food and goodies, while children ran around flying kites or played excitedly in the sand in anticipation for the huge bonfire.

Just down the road, the hosted one of s final shows of the summer, 'The Last Mountain' directed by Bill Haney and produced by Haney and Peter Rhodes. The documentary film follows the fight for the last great mountain in America's Appalachian heartland, in which the community battles a coal mining giant that has plans to blast the mountain.
