The red envelopes, please… Back by popular demand for the third year in a row, the is handing out sealed red envelopes with special items of value inside that can only be opened by the wait staff at the table. Each lucky bearer of a red envelope receives either a special prize, gift certificate, discounts off the food bill, or vouchers for free dinners or appetizers at the next visit.

"We do it twice a year, for Mother's Day and Christmas," said owner Ted Karousos. "It's our way of saying 'thanks' to our customers."

Last year, the Blue Plate Diner handed out 4,000 envelopes, said Karousos. The red envelopes will be handed out through the end of December and the prizes are redeemable through the end of January of 2011, said Karousos.
