PHOTOS: 100 Protesters Rally Against Bridge Tolls

Residents from Portsmouth and nearby communities turned out Friday afternoon to protest proposed bridge tolls on the new Sakonnet River Bridge.

 

More than 100 demonstrators took advantage of a talk show host and Rhode Island celebrity's visit to Portsmouth Friday to protest  

Demonstrators from Portsmouth, Tiverton, Little Compton and elsewhere braved the rain and stood along the busy East Main Road to protest .

The rally was held during Friday's taping of the WPRO's Buddy Cianci Show at . The taping was held to honor Rhode Island Day, an annual event held to promote . 

However, former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci couldn't ignore the controversial toll issue and spoke with several state and local politicians about the heated topic, including Senator Chris Ottiano.

Outside the store and across the parking lot, demonstrators grabbed their signs (an umbrellas) and shouted along the busy street. Many cars and trucks honked their horns in support. 

"I can't afford to come over here to shop with the tolls coming in," said Charlie Chase of Fall River, MA, as he waved a "Don't Tread On Me" flag.
