Treasure Hunt: The Beach House

The Thursday Patch Passport shows you where to find trinkets and unique treasures in Middletown. Get out and explore unique local shopping and all the Beach House has to offer.

Now in its 15th year of selling seaside inspired treasures, can tastefully dress up anything from a “coastal corner” to a seaside inspired home.

“It’s all a state of mind,” says Sally Emmett Dwyer as she offers a tour of Middletown's eclectic shop featuring many one-of-a-kind items, along with those souvenirs that make coastal New England excursions complete.

Dwyer said she had wanted to combine her talents as an interior designer with gifts, and was given the opportunity when she was laid off from her job 15 years ago. She initially opened The Beach House in Middletown. Over the years she had moved it to Portsmouth, and then Tiverton, but eventually brought it back to Middletown, where it has been operating for more than five years on West Main Road.

Dwyer’s  whimsical, nautical treasures are considered unique even for those who live by the sea.

“We have shipped shells to customers in Florida,” she said.  “The nice thing about it is that we have a draw of about 50-percent locals and 50-percent tourists. They come from everywhere, so it’s fun.”

Customers who are stuck for direction can bring in photos, fabrics or colors and Dwyer will help customers create a custom look. She often helps customers create mantelscapes or vignettes. In-home consultations are also available.

The Beach House treasures range from $3.50 to $2,000.

The Beach House Newport is located at 42 West Main Road, Middletown, RI, 02842. for more information.
