Updated With Event Photos: Rite Solutions in Middletown Mentors Newport County Students

The Newport County Mentor/Co-op Program offers students an inside look at highly technical careers at Rite Solutions in Middletown on Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Newport County Mentor/Co-op conducted a career seminar at Rite Solutions Wednesday in Middletown.

The Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group was developed three years ago to create career opportunities for students at the county's five high schools.

It is comprised of representatives from all of the high schools, public servants and small busineeses. We meet once a month at alternating high schools to discuss the next month career locations and the progress of the development of a summer mentor program.

This company, Rite Solutions, is incredibly creative and has developed a corporate  structure that allows its employees to flourish. We conducted one of our monthly meetings there a few weeks ago and were very impressed.

Students from the MET school and Rogers high school were scheduled to attend the session Wednesday.

Rite Solution Employees acknowledged and our attendees confirmed a major problem with teaching students today--how do you keep their interest, when they sometimes know so much more than you? A problem that Rite Solutions had identified and also developed a structure to capitalize on this creativity.

I presented our groups' activities to Commissioner Deborah A. Gist at her last session at Gaudet School in Middletown a month ago and she was very impressed. (See her note below.)

My thoughts are: We need to grab the attention of high school students when they are either  a junior or senior and share our local career opportunities.

This will take an incredible burden off our teachers and provide immense focus for the students.

This is the Goal of Newport County Mentor/Co-Op Group...

Commissioner Gist's email:

Hello Chris,

Thank you for coming out last week.  It was great to talk with everyone in Middletown.

The New England Boatworks visit seemed like a great opportunity to learn about local careers through real-life learning.

Thank you for working hard to serve our students!

Best,

Deborah
