Department of Health Recommends Closing Third Beach and Atlantic Beach

The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended the beach closures Tuesday afternoon due to high bacteria levels.

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday recommended the closure of Third Beach and Atlantic Beach in Middletown.

Officials warned against swimming at those beaches due to high bacteria levels.

In the same statement, DOH officials announced that Easton's Beach in Newport would reopen after bacteria levels there were found to be within safe levels for humans.

The closures do not affect any other beaches on Third Beach Road. Peabody's Beach remains open as safe for swimming based on recent water samples taken.

The DOH announcement came as a result of high bacteria counts taken following heavy rains.

DOH officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend reopenings when the areas are found to be safe for swimming. Water quality analysis is conducted by the DOH laboratory or a state certified laboratory.
