A Groovy Girls Art Show and Silent Auction Tonight

Girls who are waiting to be adopted and living in a group home will sell their art to raise spending money on Thursday evening.

Tonight a new program kicks off its first event to help empower young girls who are waiting to be adopted.  Members of Groovy Girls, which is a collaborative effort by Child and Family, Adoption Rhode Island and Communities for People will sell their original artwork to help raise spending money for the girls to buy items such as clothes to help them fit in at school.

The public is invited to attend the event at the Vera Mason Community Room at 31 John Clarke Road in Middletown on Thursday June 14, between 5 - 8 p.m.

"Our youth deserve families and homes," said Susan Carlson, who visits the group home with her therapy dog Thumper. "While these children wait for a place to call home we want to give them opportunities for fun, for success and for their future."

The goal of the program is to engage the community, help the girls believe in themselves and learn how to build positive relationships, provide opportunities for fun, success and personal growth, she said.

"We believe we must build their foundation and connect them to the community in order for them to grow into healthy young adults. We want to give these children the childhoods they deserve and caring, dedicated community members can help make this happen, " said Carlson.
