Meteor Sightings Reported Along East Coast Friday Night

Did you see a flash in the sky? We are getting reports of a possible meteor across the East Coast, including Rhode Island. Share your pictures or accounts here.

A meteor might have flown across Rhode Island on Friday night.

Twitter "lit up" with possible meteor sighting as far south as Virgina and as far north on Boston on Friday night around 8 p.m. By 10 p.m., the American Meteor Society (AMC) reported that it is investigating 436 reports of a fireball, including a report in Rhode Island.

A meteor sighting was reported at 7:46 p.m. in Cumberland that described the color as white with trailing orange sparks.

At around 8 p.m. on Friday, the Weather Channel tweeted "Meteor observed over the skies of Manhattan within the past few minutes."   Twitter users also reported sightings in Boston, Washington D.C. and New Jersey.

"It was traveling then all the sudden there was a green flash around it then it disappeared quickly," reported Daniel from Mansfield, Mass. on an AMC report.

There are several meteor photos floating around on social media claiming to be taken Friday night that are not considered credible.

I believe I saw it while driving in Coventry RI at the same time they are reporting this - appx 8pm. I justified it that it had to be fireworks, however, it was traveling sideways, rather than up. If I did see it this, It was the final seconds because I watched it do a small explosion at the end - it did a multi-color sparkle. The tail was a bright green. I rolled down my window and didn't hear any noise.

I saw it in east Greenwich with my friend Chris. Are first I thought I was maybe tripping so I told him to look and he did and we saw it together. It was a weird color but left behind a green trail.
