Middletown Cleans Up After Sandy

The morning after Hurricane Sandy swept through Middletown, crews work to clean up and repair the damage left by yesterday's storm.

As expected, the beach area was hit particularly hard by last night's storm surge.  The water billowed across Second Beach - Surfers' End, tore through the parking lot and crossed Paradise Avenue.  Officials on scene this morning said the parking lot appeared to be unsteady and severely damaged.

The area by Easton's Point also got hit by last night's surge. Memorial Boulevard by the Atlantic Beach Club was ripped apart and is closed to traffic. 

Several smaller streets remain closed on Tuesday while crews clear fallen trees and power lines. 

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation asks that residents use caution while driving.  In a release issued Tuesday morning they stated,

Although the storm has passed, there may be roads still blocked by debris. Even streets that are passable may be partially restricted by trees or crews working to restore power or fully clear the roads. The department especially wants to urge drivers and pedestrians to be wary of any downed power lines, which may be live.

As of 9:45 on Tuesday morning, there are still 5,523 Middletown customers without electricity, according to National Grid.
