Today: Food & Wine Expo, Navy Surplus Lands, Scholarships and More

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

Besides being one step closer to Friday, here are more reasons to love this Thursday:

  1. Tonight's Food & Wine Expo for those 21+ will turn out to be music to your ears. Why? Besides the live entertainment provided, the proceeds will benefit the high school music programs in Middletown, Portsmouth and Newport.
  2. Converting the five Navy Surplus lands to other uses on Aquidneck Island continues to be the talk of the towns. Tonight the Aquidneck Island Reuse Planning Authority meets at 6 p.m. with displays and discussions set up to engage the public to help decide how to best use all this coastal real estate.
  3. The American Cancer Society is seeking participants for its Aquidneck Island Relay for Life fundraiser to take place Saturday, May 21.
  4. Who wants a thousands bucks for college? The Newport County Realtors Association is accepting applications for two scholarship awards to go to two Newport County residents. The deadline is April 30, 2011.
  5. Do you know a good student, neighbor, athlete, scout or relative who deserves recognition? Nominate him or her as a Middletown Patch Whiz Kid!
